Gun Oils/Lubes- very impressive test-46 products tested

This guy tested 46 different lubes/CLP's etc. The test is very long but I'll post the summary for those too lazy to read it.

In regards to Lubricity, Odor, and corrosion prevention the top performers are Hornady's One Shot, Frog Lube, and WD 40 Specialist. 

 

He did have doubts about Frog Lube's cleaning ability. I know some people have been unhappy with it but after seeing this test I will continue to use Frog Lube or switch to One Shot at some point.

 

Please note his comments on WD 40 though "With this evaluation behind me, I an unlikely to consider the WD 40 specialist as a gun care product because it wasn't marketed as a cleaner (not meant to be a cleaner so I cant knock for that) and it didn't rank terribly high for lubrication but I will be using it for many other outdoor applications and tools where I want to delay corrosion."

I've been happy with frog lube, once I figured out it does not play well with petroleum based products. If you are going to frog lube, stick with and only frog lube.

You may want to take a closer look. I've heard good things about Balistol but it was almost dead last for corrosion protection. 45 out of 46 products.

I'm sure there are better products out there for each of the things I use it for, which aren't all firearm related. For me though it does a "good enough" job at all it's many used that I'll over look the fact that it's not "the best" at any of them. I do still use grease on areas that should be, but as far as corrosion inhibition, my guns live in an environmentally stable, climate controlled home. They get taken out and cleaned at least once a year and some of them any time I shoot them on top of that, so far so good as far as rust is concerned.

Really it could have been any product that I landed on, I just got tired of all the "your guns never been this clean" or "so good it cleans itself" and just stopped giving a darn about that aspect of gun ownership. I'm sure in a year or less I will care again briefly, pick a new favorite and repeat. Until then, Balistol FTW!! :Rock:

I heard of a product called Eezox on the Seecamp forum after purchasing one of their pistols. It was highly regarded on that site. Someone posted the following link to a test of several products including Eezox. Here it is if anyone wants to check it out. Eezox obtained a pretty good win in the 42 hour salt water test.  I've been using it now for about 3 years on all my firearms and have had no issues with rust on any of them. I simply spray it on, let it sit about 15 minutes and wipe the firearm down with a soft cloth.

Thanks for pointing this test our way. Unfortunately it put my preferred lube to to the middle or rear of every test. I'm not going to change over to frog lube for all my weapons but may try it out on my edc. Since its pretty much a dry lube when cool it may help keep lint from sticking all over the firearm.

I'm pretty happy with Frog Lube. Some people have had really bad results and FL's customer service has been horrible about it. It's also expensive.

 

But it's hard to deny it performed really well in this test.

Remember this... There are three kinds of lubricants... Petroleum based (...mineral...), fat based. (... .animal lard/soap...) and synthetic... They all do the same thing...

 

A good one should do two things... Lubricate and displace moisture... Some do better than others... Balistoil, for example, will not do a good job of displacing moisture (...i know, i use it on our cap and ball revolvers; so i wipe them down with WD40 or something handy, then finish with Balistol...)...

 

An ole buddy of mine who is a world class gunsmith told me one time when i asked him "what was the best lubricant for guns":..."...The one on sale at Brownells..."...  I think he is right...

 

Buying lubricants for your cherished smoke pole is a lot like picking your favorite beer, beer wench, girlfriend, or wife; it's a personal choice.... Pick the one you like, and don't be too worried about the "next best" one to come out...

 

It's all marketing hype, man....

Mobile 1 Synthetic 5W-20 works and works well.  Cheap too.  If it'll hold my Toyota together it'll work for my guns.

 Yep , I use Mobil 1 in my Toyota and guns. If I am storing them for a long time I pack them full of RIG grease . Never had a problem with Mobil 1 nor RIG . Two great products.

I bought some of the WD40 Corrosion Inhibitor and it is some good stuff. It is not a lubricant but it is something I use all the time now.

I've been using Shell Rotella T 15W40 for lubrication for several years in my motorcycle and firearms. Have had no problems with either in all that time.

Weapon Shield products are the only thing I've used on my HK P30. Got the 4 ounce maintenance kit from Amazon, and haven't even considered using anything else.
