New to Forum and State

Hi, everyone.

 

I'm new to the forum and am moving to Pulaski, Tennessee from Texas in two weeks. I'm looking forward to learning Tennessee gun laws. I've found that forums such as this one are more informative than any class and, since I don't have to take the Tennessee CHL class since I have a Texas CHL, I'll be learning on my own.

 

Looking forward to participating and helping the cause of gun rights in my new home.

Welcome Tom.  I think you will find a lot of useful (and some not so useful  :pleased: ) information on TGO.

 

To your point above, your Texas CHL is only good for 6 months from when you become a resident, so you will have to get your Tennessee HCP if you plan to stay longer than that.

I learned something new today. Reading from here:

 

 

 

All applicants, regardless of permits issued by another state will be processed as originals. The applicant must be twenty-one (21), complete the Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit application, provide proof of U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Residency, pay one hundred and fifteen dollar ($115.00) fee, and be fingerprinted. All applicants, except those with valid permits from New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas must take a DOS approved handgun safety course. Licensing requirements are not included in the reciprocity agreements between states. The mutual recognition of handgun possession privileges between states has not changed and is listed on this website.

 

How does that work? Just exchange a permit from one of those states for ours?

No, you don't exchange, you have to go through the whole process here.  It's basically the same as never having a permit in TN.  You have to go to the HCP class, pay the $115, get fingerprints, etc.  The handgun safety course is not the same as the HCP class.

Disappointing, but that's the way it is.

 

Do they offer discounts for veterans? Texas' fee is $140 but veterans get the license for $25.

Thanks. I got it from the Beatles' song "Come Together".  I was introducing my 1-year old to classic rock last month (Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, etc) and heard this line:

 

"He got juju eyeball, he drink Coca-Cola..."

 

I drink plenty of Coke, so thought that would be a great forum name.

That's not entirely correct. The link Glock30 provided to the TDOS site is correct. With a permit from New Mexico, Oklahoma, or Texas, you do not have to take the class. You do have to do all of the other things like fill out the application, fingerprints and pay the tax permit fee.  So it's not an exchange, but the OP does get to skip the class.

 

 

That's not necessarily a bad thing. The amount of bad information that's spread as "fact" by some of the HCP class instructors is amazing.

I still think a handgun safety course is different from the HCP class.  I think I would recommend he call TDOS and confirm one way or the other.  I know my course really had nothing to do with handgun safety, but rather more about the laws, when it was legal to use force, etc.  A safety course is something completely different for me, but I have been wrong before.  If Safety=HCP class in this case, then at least he would save a little money.

It's the same thing. TDOS officially calls it a DOS approved handgun safety course. Instructors call it a Carry Permit Class or some variant because that's more clear on what it is for and draws in the business.
