What Comes First - Stamp/Suppressor?

Recommended Posts

I'm totally in the dark on what is necessary to legally own a suppressor. I would like to have one for my Ruger 22/45 with thread barrel.

Do you submit paper work to register and get stamp prior to buying a suppressor or are they done thru suppressor seller?  I know you have to submit finger prints with application and it takes 2-6 months to get approval. I assume you cannot take possession of suppressor until you have paper work back w/stamp. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks

Stamps are specific to the device.  So, you'd purchase a device through a dealer, fill out the paperwork, pay the fees, and try to be content with the suppressor sitting in the dealer's safe for a while before your paperwork comes back and you are able to take possession it.

Try to find a dealer that also has a range. That way while you are waiting you can at least go shoot your item.

Basically you either buy directly from your dealer or buy directly from the manufacturer who then ships to your dealer. I would suggest buying direct from the dealer because that will eliminate the transfer time from the manufacturer to the dealer. Once your suppressor is at the dealer you will fill out a Form 4 and submit it will the required items as well as $200 transfer fee. Then you wait, and wait then wait even longer until your form comes back with the stamp affixed. The dealer will get the form and once that happens he should contact you to let you know you have been approved. Then it is just a matter of going an picking it up.

You also need to decide if you want to transfer the suppressor into your name or into a trust that you are a trustee of. Going the trustee route is a little quicker right now but if the eFile system would, at some point in the near future, allow you to do the transfer it will be a lot less time. The eFile system is only allowing certain forms right now and the form 4 is not one of them. A trust also adds cost but you get a reduced wait time for your money as well as being able to let other people use your suppressor so long as they are also trustees.

I have done both and now I am going to only use a trust from now on. For me it is a lot quicker to get approved for Form 1 builds.

Yep. That's the deal.

Buy can. Fill out paperwork. Pay Gov'mt. Wait forever.

This is good info and helps me. I'm also about to get my first can, so I am trying to learn the process. I want to get a trust, but not sure about that process. I've heard that some dealers will do the work to setup the trust, or should I do that on my own before I go to purchase?

Please dont say those hurtful things to us new guys...

But the endless smiles every time you shoot suppressed will be worth the wait!

Besides, wait times are trending down now anyway.  My last one went pending in May and I picked it up a few weeks ago.

Hopefully they open up Form 4's in the eFile system. The Form 1 submissions are taking less than a month.

I submitted my Form 1 5 days ago (working days). I am sending my lower off to get engraved tomorrow with about a 10 day turnaround. I didnt read far enough before filing or I would have possibly done the engraving before filing. Hopefully I will luck out and get my approval by mid November on my Form 1. I dont expect anything on my Form 4 until close to spring next year...
