M&P 22 Compact - thoughts??

Recommended Posts

Been thinking about a plinker and was looking at the Ruger SR22. However, saw that S&W just released the M&P 22 compact. Fully built by S&W in USA (not in partnership with Walther like the M&P 22) and all the reviews are saying this thing chews up any ammo you throw at it. I love the ergos of the M&P line (just can't get a comfortable grip on an SR22) but wanted to see if anyone has had a chance to actually shoot one yet.

I've seen probably the same review, and I must admit it does look interesting. Interesting enough that I might be tempted to buy another 22. lol

I seem to have acquired quite a number of 22 revolvers and autoloaders in the last few years.

But personal opinion, my favorite is an Advantage Arms kit on a G17 frame. It feels and shoots great. Almost like shooting a light pellet pistol.

I've got a Walter p22
And it is sweet.
I've read about this compact and thinkin would great to add one to the collection. Hope you fund a great value and give us a great review! Edited by Ugly

I had that Kimber conversion that I had on my Colt for a while, but just really wanted a dedicated 22. Anyway, hopefully Lowpower is enjoying that conversion as we speak, but time to get a dedicated 22

Yes, a dedicated frame is much better, at least for you and me. I really was getting tired of taking all that time and effort changing the 2 slides around. LOL

Really though, I thought that it would be much better to have the AA upper on it's own frame, so I started checking GB and found a G17 FDE frame at a reasonable price and got it. And having it in FDE was great, as all my other Glocks are Henry Ford Black; I can readily identify the 22.

Yes, I could have gotten a trade in 17/22 for not much more, but then been right back where I started. Except for a spare upper in another caliber.

In retrospect, I probably should have done that, but this has worked out well.

If you are wanting a reliable and durable 22 pistol buy one of the all steel Ruger MK series pistols.

I passed on thd S&W 22 pistols when one of their engineers told me the lifespan was forever. No pistol will last forever.

I will take a hard look at the version not made by Walther. Is the barrel fixed and is it a larger OD than the Walther version?

I'm with Dolomite on the MKIII/MKII/22/45.   Boy I have owned, worked on, shot, borrowed, etc. a lot of .22 pistols. If you want a good to pretty darn excellent shooter if you put a good trigger in it, hard to beat the Ruger MK series in any measure, especially value coupled with reliability and accuracy.   I think the lightweight look alike .22s like Glock coversions or M&P 22s, etc., are fun, but are simple soda can popping guns at best and found little overlap with shooting them and owning shooting their center fire counterparts. But, hey!  I have had the M&P .22, 5 Glock conversions, 1911 style .22s, etc.  So go for it.  Now if someone like NAA would just make a tiny .22LR semi auto like the Jimenez/Jennings JA22.

Thanks for all the replies. Only problem with the Ruger MKs, I'm a lefty. I really like the feel of them and the 22/45s, but until they figure out how to put an ambi safety on them, I'm out. Granted for target it wouldn't be that big of a deal, but still if it's gonna have a safety, need it to be for us lefties too.

Quick update, had the day off today and got a chance to go look at the M&P 22 compact at my "window shopping" stop (otherwise known as Gander Mt, does anyone REALLY buy from them??). Compared it side by side to the M&P 22 (original) and it is much smaller and the grip angle felt a little different. However, felt great in my hand and probably gonna go for it if I can find a decent price at an LGS. If not, Impact Guns has them at $329 so may have to go that route. If anyone is out and about in the Middle Tn area this weekend and sees a good deal on one, let me know.

They make a 22 conversion for the Sig 938 as well as a gun based on the 938 in 22.

Makes for an expensive 22 but it would probably be one of the best out there other than the magazine based slide stop. Edited by Dolomite_supafly

In reference to the Taurus 22PLY.

I hope it's better than the steel-framed piece of garbage my mother-in-law bought for my wife. Thing is an absolute turd. Bought it brand new, and sometimes the trigger resets, sometimes it doesn't. When that happens you have to kinda flick it forward to be able to shoot the stupid thing again. If I actually liked the gun at all, I'd go through the effort of calling Taurus and getting it fixed. Alas, it's sits in a junk drawer and is right at home there. Edited by musicman

Well it depends. The PLY-22‘s a follow-on to the PT-22 and that one did have some issues. The PLY -22 feels better in hand and graycraits shot the dickens out of both. FWIW I used to own a PT-22 that aside from not liking high velocity ammo ran like a champ.

Do you mind saying which Taurus it was?

MM got it first try. The initial runs were ammunition sensitive with specific "don't shoot these" recommendations. With standard velocity LR the PT-22 I had did rather well. I've got a Ruger SR-22 but plan on picking up a Taurus PLY 22 whenever I get around to it for a GBH truck bag.

Thanks. I do have one of the PT-22 models. I have never shot it. Guess I need to try it out.

I can't say how many times I almost bought one of those little .22's. I like the look a lot and it would be about as handy a little center console gun as any. Might still be worth looking into, but this does bump it quite a ways down the list.

Music man, sell it.
Man screwed it up, man can fix it.

I always liked the Beretta but never got one Now they stopped making em.

It's not mine to sell, unfortunately. It was a gift to wifey from her mom. If it were mine, I'd happily dump the thing for a box of WWB 9mm!
