Problems with ProMag brand magazines

Hello, I recently bought a couple of 10rd. ProMag magazines, from a seller on Ebay, for my Taurus 738TCP .380 and one for my Kel Tec PF9. I tried both the .380 mags and they failed to feed right off the bat. I then loaded up the ProMag I bought for my Kel Tec PF9 and it did the same exact thing. I have compared the lengths to the factory mags and they look the same. The only thing I have noticed is the ammo looks like it sits higher in the gun with the slide locked back. I'm not exactly sure on this as my eyes are getting worse. Is this a common issue with these magazines and if so is there a fix? I really don't like the thought of throwing that much money away, lol.

Promags are hit/miss at best.  Sometimes you can work with them and get them to function, sometimes not.

Thank you, I was afraid of that. What, if anything, can I do to try and improve them? I don't want to just throw em away. If I have to though I guess they could be used for very very expensive targets and throw them away in small fragments.

You can try to form or file on the feed lips or follower, maybe mess with the spring a bit. Go slow, sometimes it doesn't take much.  Measure things as best you can and compare to the factory mags.  Sometimes you can cycle it slowly by hand and see where it's hanging up.  A particular failure mode can be indicative of a specific problem.

Always been a hit or miss for me...mostly a miss...

 

You can always sell them on EBay...just add a disclaimer "Hit or Miss" mags. :popcorn:

I've never heard good things. I thought about buying a few for my Bersa but the reviews were pretty bad.

 

For a cheap alternative to factory keep an eye out for MecGar. I bought one for my Bersa and it's been fine.

I should perhaps have mentioned,  to be fair, that I have a ProMag 30+ mag I bought on a lark for XD 9 pistol -- though it takes a slight twisting motion when inserted to lock in, it has been 100% during firing the 5 or 6 times I've used it.

 

But I also have a couple of 15 rounders for Hi-Point carbine that do not work unless I hold up on them -- but I may have developed a mag catch prob as regular mags seem to sit too low also, in process of sussing this out.

I have never owned a pro mag but have witnessed the woes of others attempting to get them to work, mec gar is an OEM manufacturer for several brands so u are buying a factory mag sometimes if it's from them.

Take a factory mag and a promag fully loaded and put butt down on solid surface and see if the Promag doesn't have the front of the bullet riding higher than the factory mag. Bought a couple of Promags for the wife's .380 and had this problem. Took hours in the shop to beat them into spec. Would have been better to spend the $20 extra and get factory mags. Had to do this anyway because I didn't want her carrying the Promags. Just range mags now.

Yeah, I've been burnt on budget mags before too. 

I'd try sending them back to promag, or moving them on down the road. 

 

While you pay more for OEM mags its worth it in the long run.

Well, I got the two ProMag magazines to work in my .380. I noticed, after hand racking several several times, that the tip of the bullet was dragging on the feed ramp. I took the gun apart, cleaned and polished the feed ramp, and they both work fine now. I ran 50rds through it without any problems. I'm gonna break it down and clean it good and try 100rnd. box through it over the weekend. I will let ya'll know how they do.

I have several ProMag magazines for my Ruger 6.8 rifle as Ruger only sells 5 round magazines.  They've worked well but don't get used very often.

Yeah, exactly. Had it been a Magpul VFG, no issue would've been had but because alot of people see the SLIGHTLY(And I use this loosely) lower price, they choose it instead. In the aforementioned case, it was a poor decision. He has no leg to stand on against KelTec and he MIGHT win against ProMag. Guess we'll see how that one plays out. I've never understood how people justify Promag products when Magpul is a VERY much superior animal for maybe a couple dollars more.

I've bought Promags in the past and have never had good sucess with them.  I won't waste anymore money on them.  Wish Hi-Point would come out with Hi-cap mags with for their carbines.

I'm always my harshest critic and will be honest in sharing my noob mistake with these mags. When I first got into AR's I knew nothing about BCG, flat top, collapsible stocks, etc I really knew nothing about them, only shot my friends a few times. So I went to buy my first AR and then to get mags and BUIS. Bought Pro Mag BUIS and Pro Mag 30 round mags. Why? Because I'd heard all the bragging on Pmags. Same company abbreviated? Yeah I thought so! Buis were junk, and mags were less than impressive. When I asked my friend why everyone bragged on them so much, he could have laughed at me but didnt. He expressed his thoughts on the names being so close that I probably wasn't the first to make that mistake. Didn't make it again and quickly saw for myself the reason Pmags are so popular.
