Legal handgun purchase

What age does a person have to be in order to purchase a handgun from a individual? I am under the impression the person has to be 21.

I had a handgun for sale and a 19 year old was interested in the handgun and he told me a person only had to me 18 to purchase a handgun from a individual, I did not think this was accurate so I called a couple of gun shop owners and they told me a person had to be 21 in order to purchase a handgun from a individual or a dealer. I sent him a pm and told him I could not sell it to him. He thinks a person does not have to be 21 to purchase a handgun from a individual, and posted this question at Glocktalk.

An individual must be 21 to purchase a firearm in TN.

39-17-1303. Sales, loans or gifts; restrictions (2004)

(a) A person commits an offense who:

(1) Intentionally, knowingly or recklessly sells, loans or makes a gift of a firearm or switchblade knife to a minor;

(2) Intentionally, knowingly or recklessly sells a firearm or ammunition for a firearm to a person who is intoxicated; or

(3) Intentionally, knowingly, recklessly or with criminal negligence violates the provisions of §

39-17-1316

.

( It is a defense to prosecution under subdivision (a)(1) that:

(1) A firearm was loaned or given to a minor for the purposes of hunting, trapping, fishing, camping, sport shooting or any other lawful sporting activity; and

(2) The person is not required to obtain a license under §

© For purposes of this section, "intoxicated" means substantial impairment of mental or physical capacity resulting from introduction of any substance into the body.

(d) An offense under this section is a Class A misdemeanor.

A "minor" is one who is under 18, not one who is under 21.

FTF sales of handguns to 18+ persons are not prohibited by this code. FTF sales of handguns to minors are prohibited.
