Across state lines... TN to VA

I'm going to travel to norhtern VA later this month. I want to take a couple handguns along with an AR. This is something I've not done before. I'm going to do some shooting with my wife's family while there so I'll also have a good bit of ammo with me. I only have a soft case for my AR. Is this acceptable and is there anything I need to do different? I have a Toyota 4Runner so the weapons will be inside the vehicle and accessible since there is no trunk. I have a current TN HCP.

Not a problem on the Tennessee side.

Yep, just don't cross into DC, Maryland, etc. Whole 'nother can of worms there.

if you go to DC make sure your vehicle does not even have a spent shell casing or even a bullet.  If they find it you will be spending time in front of a judge.
