remodeling gun safe

Recommended Posts

I'm about to remodel my gun safe to maximize storage capacity, replace some sagging MDF and add some lighting.  I'm going to take out all the shelving and start from scratch.  I just plan to use plywood.  Since I store all but a couple long guns in silicone socks I don't plan to cover the wood with carpet or anything.  I may sand and spray some poly on the wood but that's about it.  Just curious if any one here has done this and has any suggestions regarding materials, layout, etc.  It's a 24 gun safe.

I bought clear Christmas rope light for mine after Christmas at 80% discount, and I installed one of those short kitchen style fluorescent lights in mine as well.  And at the moment, I am trying to install one of these too (its a baseball bat rack, which can be found at amazon or academy around $12).

I have done extensive safe upgrades and customizations for many years. I have worked with nearly everything you can dream up. I've learned a ton and will gladly share some tips, but first I need to know more about your situation:

Is it currently fire rated?
Do you want it to be fire rated when finished?
How many long guns / hand guns do you need to store?
Any other content besides guns?
Does it have a fire seal on the door?
Is it wired for outlets or dehumidifier rod?
Is this your only safe?
Will it be bolted down?
What floor is it on? (basement, 1st, 2nd, etc)

After sleeping on it, I've decided to just buy a bigger safe.  I really won't be happy until I do that anyway.  Thanks for the replies.

Yes!

I have an old safe that I've been farting around with for a while, planning something similar to it.  But I have to say you did the right thing.

Get one at least twice the size you really think you need. I have two overflowing and am considering a third. My wife says I need to sell some stuff. :shake: That's just crazy talk!

I totally agree with you! I'm sorta in the same boat on that as well, he said sheepishly.

Our son is getting divorced and is moving into a small apartment!  He gets his guns and she gets her guns and their gun safe.  I suggested to my wife that we should offer to keep his guns for him but, we would have to get a much bigger, heavier built fireproof gun safe to hold both his and ours.  She thought that was a great idea and we're going shopping.   :woohoo:

If you want the best safe on the market , take a look at the Browning Prosteel line of gun safes. They offer the most customizable interior and with their new and improved fire ratings for the 2015 models, they crush the competitions lower fire ratings. Drop by our showroom and we would be happy to show you the fire test results that show other brands fail a fire test below their stated ratings.
