Well been doing a lot of thinking with the wife lately about moving back towards Cookeville. We are looking at a few houses outside of the city. So how is Cookeville these days? I have been in Nashville for 18yrs now and kind of want to get back to a more country setting.

FWIW, we are from CT and planning to move to TN. Right now we like Cookeville best. Cummins falls is a great swimming hole.
We have been to a lot of towns as far west as Nashville and just seem to like Cookeville and the people there a lot.
I can't wait to get out of this socialist state. I fit in much better there.

Cookeville is a good town still, crime rate isn't nowhere near that of a large city...good politics(majority conservative)...A really nice area to reside is just south of there inbetween cookeville and sparta(hwy 111 area)...This is if you prefer a country setting, not restrictive subdivisions...Rolling hills of farmland, with quick access to both towns...:)

I lived in Cookeville for a few years and still have friends there. It's probably my second favorite place in Tn, the first being Blount County. Cookeville is growing fast these days and seems to be getting more liberal all of the time, but it's my opinion that has a lot to do with being a college town. As Someotherguy suggested you can pretty much go any direction from Cookeville and be in a wonderful area. Bend of the River gun range, about 10 miles north of Cookeville is not a fancy gun range but if Charlie is still running it you won't find a more friendly or helpful guy.

This.  Cookeville proper is getting really busy.  It's WAY outgrown it's road system and traffic can be terrible (for a small town).  But you don't have to get far out of town to find a peaceful country setting.

Grew up just outside of Cookeville, Baxter to be precise, and it was a great little suitcase college town.

Unfortunately, that was 45 years ago. It has more than doubled in population, almost tripled since then. I think it has lost a lot of thesmall town feel, but that's just my opinion.

Very much growth from the influx of northerners coming south, some from business growth. Most seems to be people just wanting to move to a less heavily populated and congested area.

Nothing wrong with it at all, I still hope to convince my wife to maybe move back there when she retires. It sure would be nice to leave Nashville behind and go to a slower lifestyle pace.

You can find just about anything in the Cookeville area that you can get here in Nashville. And if something should be missing; you are situated just about halfway between Nashville and Knoxville if you feel the need for a lot of traffic.

If possible, look at areas 15-20 miles outside of Cookeville proper and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the land and home costs. You can get a small lot, a big lot, or an older home, as well as build(although building costs do seem to be going up there as well) for considerably less in a more rural setting.

It's still possible to get a lot or home where you not only can't see or hear your neighbors every action; but to not even be able to see the nearest house.

That's what I like about the area outside of Cookeville most. You can get land like that closer in, but will likely cost you more.

All in all, it's a good place to live and retire. Edited by hipower

They have a Chic-fil-a. So that should answer your question. Makes me want to move there.

And oddly enough, I know a lot of people in the area who don't like Chic-fil-a. Granted a lot of them are related to me...but there's no accounting for taste.

Now me...I love it. Especially the breakfast platters.

I live in Cookeville. We have jobs for people looking and willing to work, academy sports is opening a distribution center here bringing in new jobs. Lots of options and houses are cheap compared to the bigger cities. Come on down and I'll take you to a few of the ranges we have in the area.

Thanks! That's a nice invite. If it happens I will hopefully be getting some nice land and can build me one. 😃

The biggest downside to the area is work. That is why I moved away. I around up staying in the same position but transferring to another area for another $3 an hour. That's been a few years but decent jobs are few and far between and the competition is fierce to get what jobs are available.

I know the pay is quite a bit less, but if we do this it will make us dept free, and that will be the blessing in this move. I've worked my butt off for the last 16yrs and need a break. 12hr days with little break is beating me to death. If it all works out I will just need a nice 9 to 5 with minimal pay. I haven't had weekends or holidays off in so long I forgot what it's like. No one should work new year, Easter, The 4th, Thanksgiving, and even Christmas Eve!! 😫
