West... I got ta thinkin about your 1911 collection a bit; and lettin my mind wander back to the "old days" when the 1911 wuz first birthed... The 1911 replaced the Colt Single Action Army, which was the first (...and i think greatest...) of the calvary pistols... Lots of folks don't know it; but the 1911 was first and foremost a cavalry weapon... There are lots of old timers from the civil war on who talked about carryin at least 4 loaded pistols on their calvary mounts... If ya do the math on that one; you've got an armored up set plus 5 1/2 reloads.... That's a helluva lot of firepower... Ole Nathan Bedford Forrest or JEB Stuart would be proud of ya...

To my way of thinkin, there's nothin more fearsome than a man on horseback bearin down on ya with a pistol blazin......

Keep shootin...

I could be mistaken, but I am pretty sure the 1911 replaced the Colt New Service, which was a stop gap to replace the Colt Army and Navy in .38LC. Something regarding the dissatisfaction of the stopping power of the .38LC during the war in the Philippines.

Which means that there were two service handguns between the SAA and the 1911.

And just to be argumentative, the SAA was preceded by many other cavalry (not Calvary, as in Mount Calvary) pistols; including many of Mr. Colt's previous works, such as the much loved 1851 Colt. Or even the Colt Dragoons, which in turn took it's name from the French for a firearm carried by mounted soldiers as early as the 15th Century.

But I really do mean this more as tongue in cheek than an actual criticism or antagonism.

The OP truly does have a great collection of firearms designed by arguably the greatest firearms designer who ever lived.
