My wife and I are going to Vegas for our anniversary in early December. We don't drink or gamble. We will be there for three full days. We do want to walk down the strip just to say we have. We plan to go to the hoover dam. Any other recommendations for things to do(or not do)? Restaurants? Or anything else we should know about?

Every major casino in Vegas has top notch restaurants, at least a few shows you can take in and spa's if you want to surprise your wife with a few hours of pampering.  Just depends on what you are in the mood for.

For shows, I've seen Penn & Teller at Rio, Carrot Top at Luxor (funny as hell), Phantom of the Opera (The Venetian made a theater just for that show), Wayne Brady's Making S**t Up at I think Tropicana (also funny as hell).

Just be ready for some shock on the prices.  Nothing in Las Vegas is cheap.

If you have a car drive out to Hoover Dam and take the tour,(stop in town if you have the chance) ,drive through Red Rock, Grand Canyon is a day trip, so is Death Valley....about 45 minutes out of town is Mt Charleston, the ski slopes should be open.....check out the "half price tickets" boots (there used to be one in front of the Fashion Show Mall) for "day of" tickets for cheaper....The Cirque shows are awesome, but pricy.....head Dow to Fremont Street for a taste of old Vegas...if you're a car guy the Quad(used to be the Imperial Palace) has a great collection....tons of great restaurants.....

Lived there for 12 years and didn't ever 'do it' all.(just relocated 1.5 years ago)..... Edited by Mongo

Went last year. Stayed at The Golden Nugget, we did the shark tank tour, http://www.goldennugget.com/lasvegas/show_sharktanktours.asp. The Nugget was very nice and has several nice restaurants inside. Went with the wife for business. We are not gamblers or drinkers and it was a short trip anyway so we did not have a lot of extra time. We checked out Fremont St and walked around a little, and saw Elvis.

Here are a couple of things we wanted to do that were recommended but did not have time for.

Lake Mead Cruise, http://www.lakemeadcruises.com/

Red Rock Canyon, http://www.blm.gov/nv/st/en/fo/lvfo/blm_programs/blm_special_areas/red_rock_nca.html

Hope you have a nice trip!

We just got back from there a couple of weeks ago, red rock was ok but honestly we had more fun doing donuts out in the desert than we did driving around looking at rocks.  The Atomic Museum is there, it was a good way to spend a couple hours in the morning before you get out to the strip.  Make sure to do the tour when you get to the dam, that was really interesting.  You can't see the inside & generators and stuff if you don't pay for that tour.

Blue Man Group was probably the coolest thing we did there, if you wait until the day of the show, you can usually get tickets for half price (this goes for almost any of the shows, not just BMG). Like btq, I've seen Penn & Teller and they were pretty good, but that was 7 years ago.  No clue on how their new material is.

As for restaurants, we ate at a few swanky places but there was a cheaper place by Gordon Ramsay called "Burgr" at Planet Hollywood.  The food there was amazing.

Just hop on http://www.tripadvisor.com and check out the stuff, there's so much to do there that you'll be able to get a better idea from a site like that.

Ellis Island always has a nice steak dinner. It is old school Vegas. Really nice charm there. The burger bar at Mandalay Bay is good if you get the buffalo or Kobe beef. You have to go to Nine Fine Irishmen and get the Mac and cheese. Delicious. There is an awesome book store in the Venetian shopping mall that has a ton of rare books. Pretty cool. If your wife has a Pandora bracelet, they have exclusive ones there at the Pandora store.

Don't think you will want to 'walk' along the Strip.  It's a lot longer than you think, especially when you start walking.  When I first got stationed out there I had been in contact with someone there and we went out to look around.  I think we only got about halfway down before we turned around and walked back to the Riviera.

Enjoy the trip.

I've spent a lot of time out there because one of my best friends lives out there. Most of the places that we used to go probably wouldn't interest you guys (I know that it wouldn't interest us anymore). I will recommend one thing though, when walking the strip and you see the "card poppers" (guys with cards making popping sounds with them) do not take the cards. They are promoting hookers so some of the card can be quite unsavory ;)

Just don't tell us.  What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. It's the rule.

If it's worth doing, it's worth bragging about!

In route to/from the dam, be sure to stop by The Dillinger in Boulder City, great little burger joint and its prices are much better than any Vegas restaurant. Decent beer too, specially during happy hour.

Take a 2 day defensive handgun class at front sight.

They also have that place called battleground las vegas (I think) where you can rent military vehicles like an actual M1A1 tank and go drive over crap with them.

Here are some things I really enjoyed last time I was there:

Ka (Cirque du Soleil) at MGM Grand
Diablo's Cantina (great mexican food)
Hash House a GoGo (breakfast) - worth a taxi ride
Walking through Old Las Vegas

Grand Canyon and/or Zion National Park.

If you're an animal lover Best Friends (where'd some of Michael Vic's dogs went) is just past one of the entrances to Zion.
