So I ordered one of these from palmetto state with five mags, cleaning kit, and bayonet for $400. My grandmother-in-law is from there, so I thought I could sell my wife on the idea of it being a part of her history. She'll never know it is mostly American. Anyone have any experience with them?

I have heard excellent reports in gunboards from this latest batch.

I have a home built vz and love it. Great rifle and while it looks like an AK its a much more sophisticated design. Get a czech style compensator - they work well

A friend bought one and I've gone to the range with him twice.  Fired about 300 rounds.  Only problem he had was with a very heavy soft point round, like 154 grains, that was too long for the chamber.  No problems with the 123-ish grain FMJs and HPs.

It was much more accurate than the Chinese, Egyptian and Bulgarians that I've shot.  Not a bad trigger.  Handguard would get hot after a couple of magazines.  I liked the bolt hold open feature.  The safety is more convenient than an AK.

I didn't care for the folding stock, but I think a piece of plastic tubing for a cheekrest would make it much better.

Overall, if I was looking for an AK-type rifle, I would be very tempted to buy one.

Before I started spending all my time here, I used to hang out on the CZ forum a lot. All I heard was great things about this gun. I've wanted one for a while myself. That's a darn good price too.

I think the one on the CZ forum was probably the CZ imported one. It has a chrome lined barrel but no bayonet lug. It also had a permanently attached suppressor. And they were a whole lot more.

The VZ 58 imports are substantially more, $1000 price point.

I've got a Czechpoint...

It is well worth it to me, but for a specific reason.

I didn't have anything in 7.62x39 and didn't really want to add another caliber to the ammo list.

But they have the Vz in 5.56. Awesome! Already have ammo on hand, and can even run it with USGI metal AR mags if desired!

Can't recommend it highly enough!

The stock has to go, but I really like it overall. Haven't got to shoot it yet, but that should be remedied tomorrow.

You're working with a good group if you do. The owner is a really nice guy.
