Best AR round 1:7 twist

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys
Just took possession of my first AR. It's a custom build that Fighting Sheepdog put together for me ( pics and build list to come). I have a 18" x3/4 1:7 stainless barrel. Who has something similar and what load are you using. I plan on this being a predator small game set up. And thinking I need to be around 70-80 grain bullets Thanks for your help

What range are you planning on taking the shots?  For predators and small game, you really don't need the heavier bullets unless you're needing to get pretty far out there.

And 77gr stuff is about the heaviest that you're going to get to feed through an AR magazine.

I'm thinking 150yrds would be about as far as I would be shooting based on the area I have to hunt

Any thin jacketed varmint bullet will have a hard time staying together out of a 1:7 twist.  65 grain Gamekings will put the hammer on anything you'd use a .223 for.

Yup.  I've spun apart light varmint bullets out of a 1:9 twist.

From what I have read, I think you have to be careful feeding 80grain. I think you may have to do them 1 at a time because they won't feed from the magazine because of their length.

I have 90gr VLD's loaded up in a mag, and they feed fine. seated realllly far in. 22gr's pushing them 2481FPS. not going to say my recipe, because I don't feel someone should necessarily copy these.

you can see how far they sit in there, the curve of the bullet starts well into the neck of the case. but, they feed perfect, and are stable in my 1:7 twist 14.5" barrel.

Have you had any pressure issues with your load.
I just picked up some 77gr bullets and going to use 322 to push them and see how they fly

None at all. Not even a flat primer. Every things been looking really good with these. Never tried 322, but I don't see why it wouldn't work really well with 77's. Should turn out to be a good combo

Not trying to find out the recipe. I am assuming you compress the load?

 I'm assuming you aren't crimping these ;)

This bullet/load kind of has my interest piqued. I haven't spent the time to experiment with deeply seated heavy bullets and reduced powder charges but if one loaded a 90gr hunting bullet like this is would make a deer hunting AR for a youngster that wasn't ready for the recoil of most deer sized cartridges.
