I have heard of loads being taken for "ransom" but I doubt it happens very often, especially with the tracking technology nowadays. Drivers abandoning their equipment happens every day though. I was just at that Flying J about 5 weeks ago. Sad that all that good food went to waste. Those reefers will run for days so there must not have been much fuel in the tank. What a mess.

Guys do that when they claim they're owed money etc, the companies try to report the vehicle stolen, which they can't, and end up getting screwed. Or stuck w Voldemort chickens

I suppose insurance covers the loss, but I'd be trying to put the trucker behind bars.  What a POS.  Can't imagine he's going to be very successful in the trucking industry if he's got a history of theft.

The co can't do anything because the whole deal is under their care custody and control.However there is a system called D a C that allows trucking companies to enter information about a driver's performance that can be shared with other trucking companies.some companies use DAC some don't but DAC was established because of idiots like this one that piss off company owners by behaving badly while on the job

I'm so confused by how the trucking industry works.  Are you saying that this guy can't be prosecuted for dumping 80k in product?

He didn't dump anything. The trucking co is responsible. He probably dropped the trailer cause they owed him money, or he was doped up,but took the tractor so he would have a ride home. I feel for the truckstop having to deal w that mess, lawyer I ain't,but,it's purely a civil matter. I'm surprised the police allowed a stolen vehicle report to go on especially when the owner knows who has the truck. It wouldn't fly in nashville for sure.

These things do happen more frequently than most people know about. Seldom makes the 5 o'clock news but I have never heard of it being done with chicken. That takes one very stupid driver thinking they would pay anything for a bunch of chicken. I have heard of truck loads of high end Electronics going up for ransom or something that could be worth a half million dollars being held for ransom by a driver but in 90% or more times the Bounty Hunters find the truck before the Ransom ever gets paid or the bounty hunters locate the truck but trailer is already empty........................... :popcorn: :popcorn:

I seriously doubt that the trailer is going to be salvageable. I know my freezes weren't after the last hurricane I rode out in Fla.

Even if it can't be made "food safe" again it should still be serviceable as a dry van, assuming it was roadworthy to begin with.

I just had lunch. Dont have a weak stomach, but I can still imagine the horrendous sight it will be when those doors come open. Such a shame.

I have a friend that owns several trucks that he leases to a bigger trucking company that he is the dispatcher for and he has to go get trucks 3-4 times a year where drivers just quit and leave them at a truck stop abandoned. He says that the biggest problem they have is finding drivers that can consistently pass a random drug test. It is a crazy world.

I had a friend that drove.  His company had been jerking him around for quite a while.  After being on the road for several weeks continuously and being promised some time off for the past 3 weeks, yet being assigned more loads, he pulled into a truck stop one day.  Mind you this is pre cell phone era.  He walks into the truck stop hands the attendant the keys to his truck and asks to use the phone.  He calls his boss and says "I quit, you need to come pick up your truck in XXX, the truck stop attendant has the keys."  His boss' reply was "You can't do that."  To which he replied "I just did, have a nice day."  He wound up riding a Greyhound cross country to get home and didn't drive so much as a car for the next 5 years.

On a related subject, you would be surprised at all the reefer trucks that also haul Hazmat products. I was in the chemical industry and we would get loads in all the time in boxed reefer trucks and I asked several of the drivers about hauling Hazmat and they just said "hey it's a load". So nice to know the lettuce or other foods you eat have been in the same confined space as a bunch of Hazmat chemicals!!
