I hope he gets the full amount. I had a wal mart employee try and check my receipt not too long ago. 10 people before me had gone unchecked; I told them to pound sand. They can ask but you can refuse.

There would HAVE to be a video here. I can't think of a big box store that doesn't have a camera at the entrance. If the video doesn't surface or the cameras were "off" that day then I would wager it went down just like the guy claims.

I do not participate in receipt checking.  I am not a thief and won't be treated like one.

I almost would not mind if they actually went through the stuff to see if it matched up with the receipt but they don't.  All they want to see is a todays date ticket.

Screw that.

I hope they go out of business over it.  Of course assuming the assaulted guy is actually innocent.

Costco better jump on that $670K. If it goes to court the awarded damages could be a lot more, as in into the millions. Juries these day default into thinking the big corporations should pay and that is why we often see BIG settlement numbers after court cases.

Do I think the broken leg is worth $670K, not even close but the fact they treated him like a thief, attacked him and held him against his will should be worth millions. Even if the guy only got a broken nail during the incident Costco should pay still pay big for treating the guy the way they did. I don't care how mouthy or cantankerous the guy is that does not give Costco, or their agents, the right to do what they did.

If the story is true, costco better break out the checkbook now

Okay, I have a Sams Card and use it often. Yep show my card going in and hand them my receipt when leaving. They look at my cart draw a yellow line on my receipt and I leave. What is the big deal. Take maybe 15 seconds for the entire action. Is everyone so busy they can't spare 15 seconds? In all honesty I think with all the theft that does go on in Walmart and other department stores I wonder how some of them stay in business. I mean thieves walk out the door with big Flat Screen TV's and computer systems every day. On the news they show video's of the crooks walking out the doors with them in carts or even toting them in their arms and no one stops them and they just beg for someone to flip them to the cops for that $1,000.00 Crime Stoppers trick that they never pay off on. They say you can remain anonymous. How can you remain anonymous and get your money???? Besides, that if I knew the guy and he was able to do it once I might ask him to go get me one.................

I need to coordinate trips with you.

I always spend more time in the security line than I do checkout.  They at best have two geezers at the door for as many as 15+ registers.  I despise that practice, and limit my trips to CostSamsCo.

If a Costco employee ask to see his receipt and when he refused the Costco employee beat his azz; I doubt you would be reading about it here because it wouldn’t be going to court. biggrin.gif

I’m always nice to the security guys at Best Buy; I bet they get tired of elitist azzhats that think they are entitled and they shouldn’t have to answer to anyone.

The thieves have to love the fact that most stores have a “let them go” policy. I hate that we have to pay for it.

may want to check your costco/sam's agreement. you probably signed a contract that states that they will check your receipt when you leave the store. not allowing them to do so is a breach of that contract.

not excusing any assault that may have taken place, as that's just stupid, but refusing to hold up your end of a contract is wrong.

You DO NOT have to be a member of Costco or Sam's Club to shop there.

Walk in and when they ask to see your card tell them you are there to buy a gift certificate. They might escort you over to the CS counter or they might not. But go to the CS counter and buy a $25 gift certificate. Then go shop like normal and when they ask for your membership card hand them the gift certificate. They will ring you up and any amount over the gift certificate you can pay for like normal. But do NOT forget to show the receipt when you go to leave.

I have not done it personally but talked to people who have.

Most large box stores have a non-confrontational let them go policy. At the end of the article Costco claims the customer attacked first, so I assume they have security video to back that up? Our local Walmart has done away with receipt checking as it was very unpopular.

Inflation, theft and fuel prices are the three major reasons of rising retail goods prices and I'm all for reduced / stabilized prices. Then again, in the past after going through the checkout with a grocery cart packed with "bagged" food and frozen items, getting stopped at the electric doors for a receipt check is ridiculous, but I comply. What's worse is exiting through the scanners and have them go off and waiting there for someone as if you're a thief. Since they don't know you from Adam, what's the best solution?

We all want lower prices and shop-lifters caught but, at what price to us?

Receipt checks are just one of the many reasons I don't shop at the big box stores. Another is that I have price checked and have never found a single thing that was cheaper there. I have never been able to finish a 55 gallon barrel of peanut butter before the expiration date, either, so it's even more of waste of money.

It's my receipt.  Give me a dollar and I'll let you see it.

You win the internetz today!

Shopping there with no membership jacks up the price 10% on everything, so you don't technically have to have a pass, but WalMart pricing will beat most Sam's Club stuff if you add 10% on the cost.

do they marry up your receipt items to what is in your bags? If not why even look.

Costco looks to see how many items are on the receipt, e.g., 7 and count that number of items in your basket.
For those who think Costco and similar stores are just about "bulk" items like peanut butter; well they sale computers, televisions, washers and dryers, refrigerators, mobile phones, safes, tools, lighting, furniture, etc etc. Generally speaking, their prices are awesome & you can't beat their warranty.

not a legal eagle but

Walls is asking for $500,000 for pain and suffering, $150,000 for medical expenses and $20,000 for lost wages, and has requested a jury trial.

I thought a right to be tried by a jury of peers was a defense right, not a plaintiff right.

(maybe Civil is different then  criminal for Jury trial)
