Putting up video surveillance signs a good idea?

My neighbor recently installed a nice outdoor video surveillance camera system for his home and outdoor buildings.  He has had problems with break-ins in the past, including one this summer.

 

I suggested that he put up video surveillance signs in some obvious locations, but he apparently thinks it would tip off potential thieves.  What's your opinion?

If they get tipped off and split it's lot better than having them be video taped and still get away with it, which is a good possibility. I can't see the harm in the signs and it could be they're more effective than the cameras anyway.

Um, yeah it'll tip-off some potential thieves...to go elsewhere. No criminal wants their picture taken during the crime unless they are the ones taking the selfie and posting it to Facebook.

I can see it helping and I can see it hurting. If you know about a camera you can plan to take the reciever. However this is way too much trouble and the average thief will go next door to your house. Also, it is not much of an issue anymore but police used to use video surveillance signs and visible cameras to alert them to dope houses. Edited September 23, 2014 by Patton

Depends on how obvious and accessible the cameras are.  Personally, I want relatively hidden cameras and a small sign that says "Smile, you're on camera."

Even if you don't have camera, the Smile you're on camera isn't a bad idea.

 

If you have cameras, having ones setup that offload the pictures to the cloud is a good idea.  One number knows how much damage they may do or if they will leave smoke behind.

If it deterred a thief then it would be a good thing.  Unfortunately, with some of the bold/arrogant or just downright unconcerned thieves that have been on the news, lately, I can see them thinking, "Surveillance cameras?  Awesome!  I can get those without even having to go in the house.  I hope it is a good system so I can get some real cash out of them."

Some may be bold as you stated and some may be arrogant as you stated and some may just be totally ignorant and illiterate because of a teacher that never taught them to read. That is why they began using pictures on road signs rather than words. Myself I like the one posted in y previous post...................jmho

tough call, ive seen where dirtbags wear masks as to where the video makes em look like ninjas breaking in and leaving. i think a sign in english and spanish that says:
there is nothing here worth risking your life over. no trespassing.

even worse,a sign lets em know to come back masked.
i caught a dumbass would be robber once because my video system stores offsite as well as on. plus i got a great faceshot and vehicle info. he worked for a contractor i hired to do roof work. we jacked the roofer and told him i would deport his ass to juarez mexico letting everyone know how great he was working for the dea.

his boss was in on it but i dealt w that later.
one of the best things to do is put cameras up. use the sign i mentioned, and hide cameras inside so if they de mask, youll het that great iD shot for the cops.
