Ruger LCR in 9mm

Following up on their recent announcements of "new models," Ruger announced today an LCR chambered in 9mm.  This pleases me.  However, its driving me nuts that they are calling these new.  New chamberings yes, but not new.

With the USPSA Revolver rule change allowing 8-shot guns, Ruger could claw a bit of a foothold into that market (small as it is) with an 8-shot Redhawk in 9mm.  The Smith 929 is still super hard to find and crazy expensive.

 

In regards to the 9mm LCR... kinda cool.  It would have been way cooler if they would have chopped the frame and cylinder to the shorter dimensions allowed by the 9mm.

Since 9mm is my favorite caliber and my wife has a .38 LCR that I really like, I will definitely have to give this a look.  Interesting that it weighs more than the .38 but I guess it probably should if it will handle +p.

Chamber pressures of a 9mm can reach near .357 mag pressures so it probably needs to be built like a 357 magnum.

Yup.  The 357 magnum and 9mm versions of the LCR have a steel frame where the other LCRs (38 and 22) use aluminum.

Having fired all kinds of LCR's and j frames, I bet the LCR 9mm will be a better shooter than the 38 version. The extra 3.5oz really helps a lot.

Coming out with a .38 first, then a .357, and then a .22 before a 9mm seems like a natural progression to me.It makes a lot more sense to me than Glock picking .380 instead of 9mm for the 42.

It's a natural progression for optimizing sales. Not complaining, just stating merchandising facts.

I totally agree when it comes to Glock. Afterall, they're as good at marketing as they are at making guns.

I question whether Ruger is smart enough to hold back a good idea/product just to maximize sales. Remember, they came out with the LC9 before the LC380.

HMMMM. That is a possibility, but they've been pretty savvy in most releases: the SR line in particular.

Agreed. Overall, they're a great company. They always seem to have their finger on the pulse of the average buyer and have more than their fair share of iconic guns.

With regards to Hammers in snubbies: I believe both God and Ed McGivern decreed that "double action revolvers should be only shot double action." So, why would a light weight snubbie need an exposed hammer?

That sounds about right to me for those 3 guns, IIRC. The LC380, which followed was basically the LC9 re-chambered in the weaker .380 acp.

What I think Ruger needs to do with this line of revolver is eliminate the need for moonclips. They have done this with the blackhawk revolver line by creating a cylinder that is for 9mm without the need for moonclips, they should have done the same thing with this revolver,create the correct cylinder for the cartridge. If they had done this I would be ordering one today. Then in a later release create the da/sa version, like they did with the other LCR version (LCRx). Edited September 23, 2014 by joe45

Intriguing but not necessarily ideal considering the trade offs of full moon clips, even though they afford speedier reloads. I believe this is one of those "I'd like to see it, handle it and think about it" revolvers. If I'm going the route of an LCR .357 Magnum platform I'd sooner stick with it in .357 Magnum with mid range loads. That's my personal take on the matter. In the end though I expect it t have a brief flurry of interest with moderate purchases and then fade into obscurity.
