Should I get PAP or WASR?

While researching these rifles I just can't make up my mind. I would love a 1000$ arsenal but that's not going to happen on my salary. Already have an AR and love it but I want an AK before Obama gets em all.

From personal experience the WASR is a fine rifle.

If you plan on using a brace or sbr with a stock then I would suggest the pap over the wasr , Better built and supposedly more accurate than a 16 inch rifle "this is internet knowledge not first hand" so not certain how true it is.

Some wasrs are fine guns it is kind of the luck of the draw though , just check the rivets and the sights to be sure they are not canted.

M92s are supposed to be great gun , check for canted sights aswell and remember they dont have chrome lined barrels so keep it clean especially if using corrosive ammo

 

I chose the Mini Draco because I wanted a smaller gun I could backpack and it has chrome lined barrel 

as well as some other options 

between the PAP and wasr I would choose the PAP if i had a little extra money to set it up the way I want it "brace etc."

 

If I didnt have that extra money and just wanted an ak I can beat up and it is ready to go as is , the wasr would be fine after inspecting it to be sure it was all right.

Thanks for the fast reply's! I plan to keep my first AK original, no extras as long as it has the G2 trigger already installed. I am leaning towards PAP because of the sight issue on WASR is more prevalent. My problem is that I'd be ordering from buds offline so no pre inspection for canted sights ect. I've even read reports of some WASRs having canted gas system if that's even possible.

Yeah, the PAP has the AKM trunion which is much thicker and probably more durable. The down side is they are HEAVY. I have an M85 PAP in 223 and with a 30 round magazine it weighs 9 pounds, not a very light gun at all.

 

Do not order from Buds, there are plenty of places that are cheaper.

Great price with the drum but how do you feel about the double finger trigger? Not to sound like a noob but I've never seen that before.

And are those underfolders significantly lighter? Also does that stock become uncomfortable after a few rounds?

I have a spare egyptian crutch folder i am planning on selling. Matching #s, parkerized with chrome bbl and a superb build. Won't be as cheap as the above rifles, but you can inspect and see the build quality in person.

Now I'm torn between wood or synthetic. Only a 40$ difference. I want the retro feel but to me black looks better.

Yeah, I was just in copy/paste mode and didn't really notice the paintball triggers.

 

Chrome lining can help a bore last longer but accuracy will not be as great so, yet again, another trade off. Realistically though are you going to shoot it enough to shoot the rifling out? Cleaning does more harm than shooting so when I buy I buy stuff that can handle being left dirty.

Yes and no.  Corrosive ammo is not difficult to clean up after but the chrome bore might allow you a little more time to do it.  Kinda of a moot point if you consider the gas system is not chrome-lined and will rust up faster than you could ever believe.

 

BTW,  milsurp 7.62x39 is a rarity these days.  However, I treat it all as corrosive after being burned a couple of years ago on NEW manufacture Russian ammo (KSAP).  It is not only corrosive, it is seriously corrosive.  Unfortunately, it's really good ammo.  Anytime I get new 7.62 ammo I will shoot some, save a couple spent cases, then clean as if corrosive.  If it's corrosive, the cases will show in a couple of days as they are steel.

Based on experience, I'd say the chrome bore will definitely be ok with corrosive ammo.  The gas system, as you said, is a different story.  It will rust like an '80's Chevy.  

 

And it is good to be suspicious of all eastern European ammunition.  I've found that out the hard way a few times  I've even had some recent Sellier & Bellot that was corrosive.  

 

BTW, a good soaking with WD-40 will save you a thorough cleaning for those couple days while you're waiting for the cases to rust.  Never had a problem with rust with known corrosive ammo when I soaked the bore with the WD.

I consider WASR the Remmy 870 or Mossy 500 of the AK world. They just work.

 

They seem to have sobered up the folks in Cugir and Vermont over the last year or more, as you seldom hear of the canted sights/blocks now, and the magazine well enlargement seems to be more consistent. They have also been configured with real solid wood stocks and handguns for some time now instead of the plywood.

 

A late convert to AK world myself, I liked the first one so much I got another. At about the same price as a new Glock in hand, I consider them among the best bargains in gundom. And much more accurate than the average AR sycophant would have you believe.

If your concerned with a chrome lined barrel? Just get the entire AK dipped in a Salt Nitride bath, and you'll never have to worry again! Plus, it's better, and MORE durable than chrome.

Yep I will go synthetic since I can always get better wood furniture later. I've been saving for a few months already but have to get my fiancé an engagement first. If I bring home another gun before that ring you will hear about me on the news.
