I believe that a rifle bullet fired in the air, exactly straight up, will tumble back to earth. it will cause no more damage than the weight of the bullet if it was dropped at a distance to allow Newtons Law to take over. Sort of like tossing a penny from a skyscraper will not really do serious damage to anything it hits. But if that bullet is fired at any angle at all it will come to earth with much more velocity, and potentially cause serious damge to whatever it hits.

It is hard to believe that OHGC actually wants muzzles aimed into the air. Yikes.

My carbine was unloaded, empty mag, bolt locked back, safety on. It couldn't have been any more safe unless I had poured the barrel full of concrete and welded the action shut.

Sounds like you were doing everything right. Not sure why they had a issue with it especially if you could visually see a open bolt. I read the other thread seems they just really did not want you there during there muzzleloading shoot. I guess the RO thought if he picked enough little things you would just go away. And like alot here I have been shooting since I was a kid. I was always shown to kep my muzzle down and controlled you are less likely to sweep someones head that way.

I vote for creating a friendship with Gallatin Gun Club.

Not that anyone would care and I wasn't at the range on Sunday but after reading OHGC response I won't be back. :pleased:

I will say that it is never a good idea to fire a weapon into the air. We can sit around and debate what mythbusters or the internet says all day, but I have seen the real deal and it is not pretty. I have seen the result in the field and in the ER and it is just bad all around. When I am not in a squad car, I work in a emergency dept that is located in the hood in Memphis. And since some are worried about qualifications: RN, EMT, TNCC, BLS, PALS, ACLS. Tungsten has the right idea, MUZZLE DOWN! :pleased:

muzzle up, muzzle down, honestly does it really matter? If you are observing the four fundamental basics of weapon safety, you aren't going to ND that weapon anyway.

as for the picture of Saddam, if he'd take his finger off of the trigger, it'd be just as safe as the second picture. As long as the thing wasn't hot, it's safe anyway.

just to remind everyone, a gun won't fire unless the trigger is depressed... as long as you keep your booger hook off of the bangswitch, and you keep the business end pointed away from anything of any real or implied value, you are being safe.

honestly, the entire argument is pure semantics in my opinion...

I don't know but if you went in the Army with this theory of rifle pointed skyward. I could hear the command now. Half right face, Front leaning rest position. Get to pushing.

Wayne Stoneback, president of OHGC, has graciously accepted my offer of getting together soon for coffee to discuss the matters at hand. I look forward to meeting with him and will convey our concerns to the best of my ability.

Thanks, all.

I hope that a mediator will not be necessary. Charlie Gibson, huh? :)
