So my wife and I are looking for a place to spend 3-4 days in mid October here in TN.  We will probably be relocating in the next year or 2 to mid/east TN and buying some property to build a house.  This is kind of an anniversay/scouting trip.  Any thoughts/recommendations for places we could stay and have some things to do while also kind of getting the feel for the area?  A friend made mention of Chattanooga being kind of nice, but didn't really expound on anything in particular.  We have also been to Knoxville, but only in passing to go to Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge.  Thanks guys for your input...

There's a lot to do around downtown Chattanooga.

I would also suggest staying at one of our state parks, in an inn or cabin. Fall Creek Falls is beautiful. Henry Horton and Montgomery Bell are nice as well.

Knoxville and Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge areas suck in my opinion.

The Big South Fork of the Cumberland River is a beautiful area as well.

What are you looking for, exactly?

For quite anniversary time Fall Creek Falls is nice but it's secluded. If your into shops and more crowds Pigeon Forge. We actually prefer to get off the crowds and stay in Wears Valley. Smokey Mountains rock in the fall.
As far as relocating depends on work, desired commuting times, need to be near hospital?, etc. Edited by Dad03

We stayed at Fall Creek Falls 2 years ago and camped 3 days. It was really nice but we are looking for just something new this time around. As far as relocating my wife has possible options southeast of Nashville or in Oak Ridge...other things may come into the picture as her graduation gets nearer. As far as commute time, emergency sevices, etc we are already spending about 45mins to an hour commuting daily in Memphis so that would probably be the goal or less when considering our move. Faster access to emergency services would be great but not at the cost of living like we are now. We want to have about 50 acres minimum after this move as we will likely spend into our golden years there and would like a plot large enough to make it a worthwhile inheritance to pass to our boys and there future families.... This stuff is all still kind of a fluid situation, hence the scouting trip being an addition to the anniversary trip...

The Chapel Hill area seems nice to me if you are relocating to be near southeast Nashville.

If Oak Ridge is a possibility, perhaps Crossville?

Personally, I love the Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg area, but I live in the Big South Fork National River & Recreational Area on the Scott County side. (Say that three times fast) If you're looking to get away from it all, including crowds & tourist traps, it's a dream. Hiking, camping, canoeing, horse back riding, overlooks, natural bridges, caves, & lots of peaceful scenery. There ar places you can actually go to & not see another person for days. There's not much shopping nearby (unless you really like Walmart) & the nearest large town is Oak Ridge, which is just over an hour away & Knoxville is another 15-20 minutes. Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg are about 2 hours away. The BSF National Park is a little secluded, but it's is a beautiful place to find peace & quiet.

Be sure to check the link... http://bigsouthforkpark.com/ ...by the way. I live about five minutes from the welcome sign at the home page of their site. It's a beautiful area.

Lived in Knoxville for about 18 months and it was absolutely fantastic.  Plenty of big city stuff to do and still full of small town people.  We would move back there in a heartbeat to get away from cesspoolville.. I mean Nashville.

If you decide around Nashville, the Fairview/Dickson area is going to be one of the few places you would be able to find that much property at a reasonable price.  Full hospital in DIckson (about 15 minutes from Fairview) and Fairview is about 25 minutes away from Vanderbilt and 20 minutes from St Thomas along with a few others right at the 30 minute mark.

What do you like to do?  There's lots of options in the Chattanooga or Knoxville areas.

For an anniversary weekend, I'll throw this out there... Take your wife to a show at the Cumberland Co. Playhouse and stay at the McCoy Place B&B.  My wife and I have been to the playhouse several times and stayed at that B&B twice.  It's a very quiet and relaxing place.

We've lived in the Maryville area south of Knoxville for 11 years.  It's a small city but is close to everything of necessity.  It's off the beaten tourist path to Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg, about 45 minutes away, but close enough to enjoy the beauty and relaxation of the GSM.  You're within a couple of hours drive of all the good things about East Tennessee.  Add an hour and you can get to the good things about Middle Tennessee.  Land here ain't cheap but you might find a good deal.

I've bounced around this state all of my adult life.  Been in Blount County for the past 4 years and love it, here.  No where else in Tennessee that I'd rather be.

Hell we might just end up driving here and there over the course of those few days and staying in a hotel or two. There wasn't really anything in particular we were looking to do other than NOT sleep in a tent this time around. My family likes being outside and camping, hiking, etc so we would definitely be more at home in mid/east TN in that respect since there are a wider variety of opportunities. All this hinges mainly on where my wife's engineering degree lands us after her graduation as she will at that point make more in salary than me...
