I don't see why this is a surprise. CP looked like an idiot after the all was said and done with the IRAQ war. I personally feel that the Bush administration hung CP out to dry. I don't blame him a bit. And I don't think it is a BLACK thing.

CP is an honorable man and I respect his decision. Even if I don't agree with it.

It is a real shame that Powell would allow race to trump his values if he ever had them. I know some people do not think it is about race but even Powell admitted it was partly about race when he talked about it back in August. And for it to not have been about race... he sure did bring it up a lot yesterday in the official announcement.

I believe in mandatory service of some kind to your country. Be that in the peace/job corps, military service, civil service, etc.

I'm not sure what founding principle is violated by the notion that you have certain duties to your country that you can be compelled to perform.

Not to say I support mandatory military duty, but one must be careful not to confuse one's own personal opinions with "the basic foundation of the US."
