Recoil pad for Win 1897?

Recommended Posts

Ran across a Winchester 1897 that has had a long life for a price I could not pass up. At some point in its life the butt pad was removed. It is a take down model that someone cut the barrel on. Since it is already bubbaed I'm not concerned with a period correct pad as long as it fits.

So does anyone know where to find one?

Thanks,

Verne... We're model 97 affectionados too... I think (...that means that i didnt go down and look in the safe to tell...) that the "original" winchester butt plates are black hard rubber, are crosshatched, and say "Winchester".... Ya may have to sand the pad down a bit to make it fit like it should; but that aint a big deal if you are patient and careful....

Good luck and enjoy your 97...

PS--Karnage's post above is it...!!

If you want a recoil pad, just order one of your liking from Brownells, Gamaliel Shooting Supply, etc. You'll need to fit most ay you buy. You'd be more than lucky to take an original buttplate from one 1897 and put it on another one ant it fit correctly. Aftermarkets plates or pads are purchased oversized and cut to fit.

Thanks guys.

I found several when I was searching around but none that I really liked.  The one Karnage posted is the majority of what I found.

Since this one is not original I don't have a problem playing with it.  The barrel was cut back to just under 21" so I'm going to be cutting it down to 18.5".  The barrel wasn't cut straight anyway and is really bugging me.

Just need to find a recoil pad for it that I like.

Thanks again,

Verne... Greg probably gave ya the best answer unless you are lookin for the "period correct" look on the 97... I like the old pachmeyer type recoil pads... I would pay someone who knows how to do it to fit it and it will look great and help your shoulder out a bunch....
