The only dealings I can remember having with police were of the traffic variety...so I really cant comment on that. However I do think chopping the bushes lower and/or installing some motion lights would be a good idea. You could also place a lost and found ad in the local paper for a gas can and siphon hose and see if the guy is dumb enough to come get it ;-D

Wonder if you could rig a sprinkler system to the motion lights? So they get a nice "shower" then it comes on. Would be easy to spot them if they got down the road and would not hurt the dog... heck my dog would love that!

I have a friend that's from Florida originally. When he lived down there, he kept getting his car stereo stolen. After about the third time, he rigged up fishing hooks on the back of the stereo head unit where you would reach up behind to pull it out. He went out to the car one day and found blood everywhere, along with pieces of flesh hanging on the fishing hooks....but the stereo was still there!!

Painball Sentry is a GREAT idea. He's upgraded it where it is slimmer, but taller. It even has a universal mount!

personally, I really don't think I have too much to worry about as far as someone breaking into my house, or many of my personal possessions. I have both my front and back yards fenced in separately. in my front yard is my 85-90 lbs boxer who is rather large and intimidating to those who he doesn't know. in my back yard is another dog, about 60 lbs who'll let me know long before an intruder ever makes it onto my back porch. IO am currently raising another boxer pup who will take my 60 lb dog's place once he passes away.

the area that's left can easily be seen from my bedroom window ( including my parking spots) and there isn't anywhere to hide.

honestly, If you don't want to cut the bushes, have you thought of placing fishing wire between them and the house? unless someone gets extremely close, they'll never see it, and it'll make it a lot harder for a criminal to hide in them. just a thought.
