Glock Gen 4 owners I have a question

The Gen 4 was primarily designed around the .40 cal . The double recoil spring lasts longer than the single coil spring and gives better lock up. The issues with the gen 3 .40 were the pounding that the .40 cal operating pressure puts on the guns, the possible (not likely but POSSIBLE) "catastrophic disassembly" from it firing while slightly out of battery from weak (read that as should have been replaced long ago) recoil spring and the metal bodied weapon mounted lights causing malfunctions. The Gen 4 largely solves all of those problems......the problem is that they took the same internals and put them in the 9mm.... one size does not fit all. It worked OK with hot 9mm ammo like +P duty ammo but not for some of the  generic US produced  FMJ ammo.

So you had a gun "sprung" for 40 that folks were trying to shoot "softball" 9mm in. You run "weak" 9mm like Remington UMC ball ammo and you have malfunctions. So glock first tried to fix it with a different recoil spring for 9mm....a good start but that did not always solve the problem. Then they figured out that it really needed the ejector to be redesigned for the 9mm AND change the recoil spring. The current production 9mm all have the new ejector and new spring. If you have a Gen 4 with the older spring and ejector you can get Glock to send them free to an armorer for installation. They will send anyone a recoil spring but  I don't think they will send the "ejector with trigger housing" to individuals. They want a certified Glock armorer to put that in for you.

Just a bit of trivia....GLock did the same thing in reverse in 1990...when they introduced the 22 and 23 they essentially just put a .40 cal barrel in a 17 and a 19. So they had a .40 sprung for 9mm....  The Gen 2 and Gen 3 .40 cal guns (there is no gen 1 .40) have always been "sprung" for 9mm...hence the accelerated wear on .40 cal vs 9mm and why the .357 Sig chambered glocks are even worse for accelerated wear.

I have both an early model Gen 4 17 that would have random malfunctions involving ejection until I replaced the spring and ejector. I have a Gen 4 34 that is a year old that has been fine. SO it really is a matter of whether it has the newer ejector and recoil spring. The gen 4 .40 never had any of those issues as the gun was designed FOR that caliber.

I have an early production Gen 4 17.  I got a new recoil spring from Glock but I'm sure my ejector isn't the most current one.  Since my gun runs great should I even bother with the ejector?  I'm not afraid to take my gun apart so if it isn't expensive I may prefer to order one from Midway or Brownell's instead of going through the hassle of taking it to a smith.  Anyone know the part # for the new ejector?  BTW, one of these days I will make it to a training Randy.

As an aside my Gen 4 27 had erratic ejection for maybe the first 50 rounds but now shoots just fine... Harsher than the Gen 3 26 I should have kept... but I can't complain about the function.

I did a LOT of reading before I jumped into the gen 4's. Yes, it seems all (ok almost all) the issues were with the 19 + 17, in regards to all the things Cruel hand luke delved into. But from most the reading and reports I saw, Glock did get it worked out and all the gen 4's are good to go now. All my Glocks now are gen 4's.

I have a 19 that had updated parts installed by a previous owner, I have 3,800 rounds through it with no issues (that were not operator induced).

Another 19 that has or came with the updated parts, with around 300 flawless rounds through it. And a 34 with 400 trouble free rounds.

Thanks guys. I went with the Gen 4 27. So far its really nice. And Cruel Hnad Luke , that is an awesome bunch of information. I didn't pay attention that much when all the crap was going on at first about the gen 4's when they first came out.

As far as the wear on the older Gen 2 22's and 23's , is the reason for the wear spots about midways in the slide rails because they use the same recoil spring as the 9mm ?
