Internet takeover

Does anyone know anything else about this?  It says Obama and his cronies are just about ready to take over the internet?

Government bureaucrats could tie the Internet up in red tape, censor content, decide who can use the Internet, how to use it and when and more. If they succeed, it will:

  • End competition between Internet companies to win customers and set pricing.
  • Destroy the engine of innovation that has made the Internet what it is today.
  • Drive out the very risk-taking entrepreneurs that have invested billions to get us this far. And,
  • Erase your Internet freedoms, upend your right to privacy, censor the content you view on Internet, seize control of e-commerce, keep records of the sites you visit and when, track what you read and for how long and so much more!

Never heard about this. They are fixing to give the internet away though. It seems that they give up control of ICANN: http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2014-03-17/the-u-dot-s-dot-ends-control-of-icann-gives-up-backing-of-the-free-speech-internet

The monopolistic cable providers and both parties of our government would love to get control of the internet.  That said, all of the colored revolutions of the last 4 years have shown that's a pretty difficult beast to contain.

I'd be aware of bills that limit privacy and "online freedom", but wouldn't spend too much time worrying about the .gov's efforts to shove Pandora back in his box.

Hah, good luck with that.  The basic way the internet works makes this a very difficult task even if it was true.

What's your source?

It does sound like what his bosses would like to do though.

I have been getting emails from several sources ad when I got one I kind of ignored it. Then I got two or three more from other sources and had 5 different sources send me emails about it today so thought I would ask if anyone else has heard anything. I ain't the sharpest knife in any drawer so I ask questions..................  :hiding:

If this happens, I hope an open-source competitor surfaces within a few years. When people realize how bad controlled internet sucks, they will jump ship for anthing that resembles what the internet is today.

The problem is that the internet isn't one entity. It is billions if not trillions of servers linked together. The only way to control it would be to monitor constantly and take down servers with banned content and/or track and prosecute people who access them. Look at child porn, as an example. If this were so easy to do it wouldn't be a problem. JTM Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Well, don't think there's anywhere near a trillion computers in the world of any type, even counting smart phones, but anyway you don't have to shut down individual servers to zap or limit content within a country, you just need control over the exchange points of the major pipes. Even satellite transmission is worthless without the terrestrial gateways, which could also be controlled.

Democrats and liberals make up preposterous stuff about Obama to try to keep people distracted from the real craziness he does and is proposing.

I don't know but if it was that easy child porn would be nonexistent on the web. JTM Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Well, since I grew up in the so called dark ages I am sure I could do it again. Would just drive over and visit a friends instead of calling them on my cell phone. Would go back buying stamps and mailing letters I wrote by hand to relatives and friends. Would mail off bill payments in snail mail instead of paying them on line. I sure would feel sorry for all of the folks with children between 4 and 17 years old. Their lives would become a living hell because they would actually have to deal with their children and become parents if they survived the 1st month................jmho

I do IT for a living and say, (even though it will not happen) if the internet was gone I would throw it a farewell party with all our neighbors the same day.

You can't stop individual content very easily, no. Certainly as long as peer to peer protocol exists, not possible at all.

I was just commenting that it wouldn't be that difficult to nuke all access period. Of course when that happens, you'll know Brave New World has arrived, and incremental steps in between should of course be fought tooth and nail.

I am sure I am not alone, but I have no clue how it all works anyway.  It is way over my pay grade.

End it tomorrow and I will be sad for a day.  Then I will relearn how to balance my checkbook once a month.

Life was better before the internet and 1200 hundred TV channels.  I might not mind three networks for TV and phone calls or letters to keep up with friends and relatives.
