If the post-86 ban were repealed....

I would just buy a handgun in a different state, that's one of the most ridiculous laws I've ever heard of.

Many of the guns listed in this thread can be had now. The key to the post-86 piece is that guns made after 1986 could be had with a stamp. Thompsons, ARs, AKs, MP5s, M2s...it's the stuff that didn't exist before 86 that would open up. Though the price on the pre-86 would drop...I think.

The price of a full auto SAW, M-60 or PKC is faaaaaaaaarrrrrr greater than a semi. If the ban was lifted they would be the same price. I would never own a semi-auto belt fed, and I'd never pay the current price for a full auto. I just really want a belt fed. Once I have that I'm all set on squad weapons.

Is that true as a general rule? When my dad bought the mp5s for his department I thought I recall him saying they weren't too much...

Taking about a civilian trying to purchase a pre-86 FA belt fed for transfer. That's a lot of money. You can buy a semi for a lot less. If the NFA was repealed they would cost the same. Just like a semi MP5 versus a FA MP5 on a legal LE buy. Should cost the same.

I guarantee your Dad bought a post sample MP5.

I'd bet a new post sample NIB HK-MP5 (I don't think there made anymore) would cost approx. $2k, I've seen used ones for a little as $875.

Really never noticed PreMay samples, so my guess they would be around $5-10k range.

Transferables (we can only buy these) $25-35k, price is based off: clone, registered receiver (RR), factory gun or sear (the most desirable).

Can be had now versus can be had now affordably are two very different things. Market prices would drop on a ton of transferables and many items in this thread would be available new for the first time in nearly 30 years.

I'll buck the tide -- wouldn't much care about having a full auto anything.  I guess a three round burst AR would be rather cool, and perhaps even "practical" after the Big Crash, but full auto, nah.

edit: Well,  then again maybe just one AK with a drum,  in case I needed to do the "kill everyone in the room at the poker game" type thang. ;)

American 180 hands down.

Otherwise I couldn't afford the fun! ;)

Those little micro M1919 / M2 machine gun replicas would be a blast too

He outfitted a department with them so I'd imagine they were post samples as there'd be no need to spend the extra on pre-ban stuff. He also got some Colt M4s around the same time IIRC. I got to check one if those out, but never the MP5s.

I've shot a ton of full-autos and it don't do much for me, but there's a few that are pretty useful

M-4
M-249

MP-5 (even though I despise HK, this gun is stupid reliable and efficient)
