Looking for someone to help me bend receive flats and weld rails. I would like someone walk me through the process of bending and welding a few receivers on their equipment. I want to see what goes into the process before dropping the money on my own equipment.

Troy Sellers over in Kodak. He's like Mr. AK for custom stuff, has national following.  Nice feller too based on my limited interactions with him some time ago. I assume he knows all about that part of AK making whether he does much of it or not, but I wouldn't expect him to give up much if any time for free, seems he tends to stay backed up for good while.

Mike Dresner over in Oak Ridge does everything he does very well, just don't know extent he goes in for AK, though, you could ask and see if any possibilities there, again wouldn't think would be fair to expect  much more than maybe a bit of verbal advice for free though.

csc8569, I have a flat jig, rail jig and a few other AK related tools.  I've built a couple.  AKs are not my speciality but I do work on a couple every few months.  I'd highly recommend Troy if you're wanting professional AK build.

 

Outside of that, if you're wanting to do something completely on your own, you're welcome to use my flat jig, press and tools.  I've tig welded rails on the few I've done but the best jobs I've seen have come from those spot welders you can pick up for a couple hundred bucks.

 

Unless you're going to be building going forward, the jigs and tools can get very costly very quickly. Even with me having the jigs and tools now, it's still hard to justify pressing a flat and doing all the welding when you can pick up a Nodak Spud receiver for around $100!! If you're looking to build just one I'd highly suggest getting one of his "rolled" receivers ... his are heat treated and come with the rails and center brace fully welded in. 

 

But ping me if you can't find a hobbyist or build party and we'll work something out.

If you want a true non-traceable firearm, a flat is the way to go due to no paperwork trail but NoDak makes the best receivers out there for the price. I wouldn't waste the time on a flat build.

Don't know of local guys that can personally walk you through but if Troy at InRange is taking work again, he can't be beat. 

Here are a couple links to jigs and tools you can use to do your own. Robert Forbus is local here in Nashville and you can get him on the phone and he will be a world of help. Essentially all you need in addition to the jigs is a 12 ton press (or better). Even a cheap one from Harbor Freight, a bolt cutter (for rivets), and welding set-up.

As far as paper trails if you have EVER bought a firearm that required a background you may as well buy a new receiver. If they come all you say is you sold it last month at the gun show. Thinking that one unregistered receiver makes you safer is not true if you have ever bought a firearm on a 4473.

 

I get the whole "I don't want the government to know" thing and in that case just go to a gun show, Armslist, GoC or here and buy a firearm on a handshake.
