Buying a vehicle for Cash in GA

So, My wife and I have been pondering this and hopefully someone can answer this before we go to buy the vehicle on Monday.

The wife and I are buying a 4Runner in Fort Oglthorpe, GA for cash FROM A DEALER. The question is: Where Do we pay tax? Both states? I was under the assumption that we paid taxes in our beautiful home state of TN but won't that dealer need to pay his tax on the sale? Please don't tell me we will have to pay two state's tax. If so that might be a deal breaker.

This happens often, most times you pay the tax when you get your plates.  So you would pay in TN., if the dealer makes you pay tax TN will give you credit for it.  I would confirm this with the DMV on Monday to make sure before you do it.

You would pay sales taxes in GA, then if GA taxes are lower than what it is here in TN, when you go to register the vehicle here, they will charge you the difference.

Have done this with a vehicle from KY last year - their tax is 6% or something, so I had to pay an extra 3% when it was registered in Williamson county

Awesome, that is what I was looking for. Someone who could speak from experience. Thanks for the quick response. Trying to google this but when it comes to taxes and beurcracy I usually draw a blank stare. Thanks ADHD.

Couple years ago, Dad brought from a Dealer in NC, no tax at the dealer and then paid tax when he tagged it back in his County in TN.

It depends on the laws in Georgia.  In some states, like Florida, you pay taxes at the Florida rate whenever a vehicle is picked up in-state, then Tennessee credits you with the amount paid in Florida towards the tax due here.  Other states waive state taxes on vehicles purchased by out of state buyers, you pay the full amount when you register the vehicle here. I don't remember what the specifics are in Georgia, but no, you shouldn't wind up being taxed twice.
