Hello TNGO,

My name is Sam, but you can call me snacks or Snackbar lol. I'm an avid shooter and patriot, big into tactical shooting, gear, and training/prepping.

I'm 27 years old and currently live in the cesspool that is Connecticut. My wife and I own a house here we bought 6 months before the Newtown shooting and the insane new laws. Since CT has gone crazy we have been trying to move out of here to a free state. We looked at New Hampshire for awhile but we took a trip to Tennessee in April and fell in love.

I started applying for jobs and got an interview lined up in murfreesboro this weekend. I have a friend very much like me who just left CT and moved to McMinnville so I will be driving my f350 down from CT to stay with him this weekend. I'm hoping to get out and look at the area, potential houses, shooting ranges, state/national parks etc. I talked to a Realtor and will be getting a list of houses to check out. I would like to live outside of the city limits and not in the suburbs. We like the private log cabin on 10+/- wooded acres lifestyle. Me mostly so I can shoot in my backyard and her so she can grow a garden and have plenty of room for our two dogs.

Is this something I can get within an hour drive of murfreesboro? I was looking out near altamont and Manchester. Are there any good ranges in the area accepting members? Training schools? Good hunting? State/national parks? Any advice about murfreesboro? Any areas I should avoid? Anyplace that would be less likely to accept new people in the area? What kind of shooters are prominent down there? Up here there are the hunting/clay shooter types, and some tactical/competition guys, will I have any trouble linking up with other like minded shooters? Any advice you guys can give me would be greatly appreciated, I'm working on one weeks experience in the greater Knox area and a day trip to Nash.

Looking forward to meeting all of you guys someday, I'm excited to get out of Connecticut, I promise I'll bring no Yankee bs down to the volunteer state haha.

Thanks everybody.

Welcome!

I am looking to move out of the suburbs and onto some acreage myself. The SE side of Murfreesboro seems to have the most reasonable price per acre because of the time it would take to commute to Nashville. The NW side to the West of Smyrna is nuts on prices because of easy access to I-24. The land tends to be narrow and deep everywhere that I've seen so far, so half that acreage makes for a fairly good distance. For instance, I just looked at 27 acres on Rocky Fork Road that's about 150-200 feet wide but goes way back. It was the only thing priced under $10,000 per acre. Another 5.27 acre lot a couple of miles further away from Nashville was $150,000, and the same size lot closer to Nashville was $219,000. :stunned:

Forum members have stated that Murfreesboro is going down hill. I don't live there, (I do shop there at The Avenue a lot), but news stories would indicate that it is going downhill: however, individual perceptions differ too.

Welcome!! I greatly appreciate that sentence. Thank you for that. I was a Maryland hostage until a few years ago. You will love the freeer lifestyle of TN.

I don't live in the area you are asking about, but you found the right place to get help. Edited by Batman

You can draw a fairly broad circle and still be within an hour of Murfreesboro. Check out Spring Hill and possibly even Columbia (Maury County side for the taxes) to be easily within an hour. There's also plenty of country living opportunities between Murfreesboro and Spring Hill down 840.

Check out www.realtracs.com and try Rutherford, Williamson, and Maury Counties for starters. Really though, you can probably do any county touching Rutherford and possibly two counties off and be within an hour. Beyond that, as always, do your research on what's in an area, taxes, etc., before settling down.

Once you find something you like, go to www.assessment.state.tn.us to do your research on tax value, property specs, etc. If you want to know about property taxes, www.tennesseetrustee.org to pull 'em up. We have great online resources in this department... some of the best in the whole country. Our gun laws aren't bad either. ;)

Welcome to TGO and c'mon down!!

I 2nd Columbia. I live on Hwy 50 between Lewisburg and Columbia. I am about 1/4 mile from I-65. Can be in Franklin in 25 -30 minutes. Land around my neck of the woods usually goes for 2- 5 k per acre on a good 10-20 acre tract. I am about 1 mile from Duck River which is some good fishing. I live in the country and have honestly never been to a range. There is a new one in chapel Hill I believe. And I am just a stones throw from thousands of acres of state land if you are a hunter. I am a younger guy myself (28) and I have no plans to ever live anywhere else. Actually I have lived on the same road my entire life. Edit: I forgot to mention that I drive a truck for a living and have been to 48 states including yours. There is some nice scenery up there but after seeing all the states I still choose here. I don't think you will be disappointed anywhere in TN. Edited by glowdotGlock

South of Murfreesboro towards Manchester (Coffee, Warren, Cannon, Bedford  counties) is still reasonable on housing and 45 minutes max from Murfreesboro.  Several state parks nearby, particularly South Cumberland State Park on the Cumberland Plateau are a short drive.  Offer hiking, backpack camping, etc.   Fall Creek Fall SP is a reasonable distance away and offers an inn, restaurant and golf course as well as all the normal park activities.      A couple of shooting ranges in the area but nothing spectacular.  Don't know about tactical.

As far as middle TN goes, you have a wide range of choices that will fit what you're looking for. And cheaper the further east and or south/southeast of the Boro you go. I've always thought that the area around shelbyville/tullahoma/Bell buckle/manchester is some of the prettiest in TN. Rolling hills and nice. Of course the further you are from nashville the more you have to travel to get into town, and the further you will be from shopping/quality medical care/etc. Its a balance and you will find the one that fits you

I was just up in Wartrace/Shelbyville area this weekend and heard that some of the acreage around there is pretty cheap.  You would be on a flood plain though, so that's the reason in the price difference.

You seem to be favoring the Murfreesboro area. Other than the potential job there, is there another reason you like that area?

i dont think i want to live in murfreesboro, i went down this weekend the interview went well. if i was offered the position i would like to live in the woodbury area, cannon county.

middle tn definitely seems like it has a lot going on economically, and i like the geography in the hilly areas. it also helps that all the people i met while down there this weekend were really nice, good people. hopefully this turns into something.

Excellent choices, and there's a really nice range in Woodbury called the OK Corral... just $5 to shoot all day.  They have maybe half a dozen pistol pits, rifle lanes to 200 yds, and skeet shooting.

I live up in the 'burbs between Nashville and Murfreesboro in Smyrna just off Sam Ridley Pkwy.  I love my area, just no land for shooting. :-(   Wifey and I just hit our 30s and I guess you could say are in our "earning years" or whatever that means! Ha!

Everything we need, from church and grocery stores to hardware, clothing, and even a hospital are all within 2 miles of our house, and we can see 3/4 of those things from our front stoop.  That's great for the phase of life we are in now, but our goal is to save for another decade and then move right out to where you are looking now, onto maybe 40-60 acres.  Anyways... I guess you didn't ask about me! Haha!

Welcome (potentially) to the patron state of shootin' stuff!  I look forward to seeing you at the range soon!
