Recommended Posts

i wasnt sure and bought some of the nicer orange vests at grandpas over the weekend, as they were having a 50% off sale, but the ones i got have the silver reflective strip on them,  will that make a difference in distracting deer I know I know we cant think what the deer are thinking didnt know if anyone might have a clew from past tests being done.  Thanks   I will now go bakc in the corner with my dunce hat.  :)

I try and not have anything on that can shine back at the deer.  Though they may not "see" orange, they are very good at seeing things that move or shine in their eyes when not expecting it.  That being said, if you hunt in a stand or blind, chances are they won't notice anyway and the reflective part is for your hunting partners/neighbors.

The reflectiveness of that strip will likely startle deer or at the very least cause them to pay attention to you. You should cover it up with tape or remove if possible.

Put camo duct tape over the silver?

+1. You could also use some non refective duct tape (I wouldn't use black though...too much contrast) or even a flat paint if needed. That refelective tape will get a deers attention quick & could ruin a good shot.

we can turn them inside out so that should fix the problem. Thanks again

Even better, sometimes the solution is too simple to see right in front of you....and everyone on the forum you asked  Edited by rugerla1

Ok without starting a riot by stating the obvious or mentioning any team names. The orange vest with the reflective tape are the new collegiate fall wardrobe line. The orange is in support of your favorite team and the reflective tape is so you don't get run over on the highway while performing community service.

I have 10 or more deer hang out across the street from me in a vacant lot that are usually their every evening so I get to try out different things to see if they'll spook or notice. What's shocked me the most is one of those laser lights. They have never acted like they even seen it even when I shined it on the ground in front of them while their eating. I've even shined it in their eyes and they didnt show any reaction what so ever. Has anyone else noticed this or are these deer just blind?

Like R_Bert said, they're color blind.  A study was done in the 90s that states they are more specifically red-green color blind, so if your laser was red they probably didn't notice but a grey blob.  This video starting at around 6:30 starts talking about the science of a deer's eye, Part 2 goes into the color part.

Just a slight correction...

I understand their color blind but does that mean they can't see light at all ?

not a monochromatic laser. "light"  - headlamps, flashlights, etc, are polychromatic.

eta - and just noticed the response above.  Correct.
