As Much as I love technology., bit coin has already been plagued by scumbags who have stolen or conned others out of Hard earned money. Proceed w extreme caution as you should with any investment or speculative item. Edited February 1, 2015 by Dustbuster

As has the dollar. Mt Gox was an obvious exception but in large part, many of the others (Like the Trendon Shavers thing) were scams that you only had to have your eyes open to avoid them.

 

If you have bitcoins and you store them properly, it's next to impossible for someone to take them from you.

Some folks don't know how to spot the scammers, and are dying to not miss the next dot com style investment blast, rightfully so, but I get what you're saying as well. The mt gox crap opened a lot of eyes. Especially w the bulk of the circus running offshore.

Again, that's a regular old scam that just happens to use Bitcoin.

Looks like it's down about 8% for the day. Anybody have any new insight on this bitcoin phenomenon? For some reason I find it intriguing.

It's doing OK. Price has been lower, price has been higher. It's been through a lot, plenty of scammers drawn to the fresh money but it's been surprisingly resilient. I like it but I always recommend people do their own research.

^What tnguy said. Do your own research. I bought the wife a car before christmas with some, though I exchanged them for dollars and paid tax on the currency exchange gain as my accountant suggested just to be safe.

If you plan on getting into altcoins I can sell you everything to get set up (except the video cards) pretty cheap, I need to make room for a new reloading bench.

Heh, Bitcoin is risky but altcoins are for gamblers.

It's all the same stuff, speculation and value placed on magic internet money by people that have millions invested and are in too deep to get out.
