Best Slickum (grease) For Ruger 10/22 Bolt?

I'm not new to the Ruger 10/22, but have one of mine disassembled, and wondered if anyone knew of the best grease to apply sparingly to the bolt slide rails and charge handle slide surface. Looking for something that is extremely slippery, even with a very thin application. Also, where can I buy it...locally, or online? Thanks.

Don't use grease, it'll just attract the tons of crud created by firing 22LR ammo.  Spray the bolt down with a dry lube like Remington Dri-Lube and reinstall it.  Recently got to refinish a 10/22 that someone had been very diligent about oiling/greasing but not so diligent about cleaning.  Had to completely disassemble the bolt and triggergroup and spent over an hour scrubbing them in the solvent tank to get the crap out.  The 22LR crud plus any wet lubricant will turn into tar really quick.

If you prefer to use a "wet" lube look for Shooters Choice FP-10 lube. I had been using the Shooters Choice solvent for several years and was getting really fantastic results from it when I saw that the same company offered a lube. Got one bottle to try and found it is really slick. So slick, in fact, that Kimber recommends it for the break-in period of their Solo pistols. This is the first time I remember a manufacturer making a specific recommendation for a lube during break-in. One of the instructors at the NRA summer classes at Montgomery Community College (I think it is the class where advanced 1911 builds are taught) requires his students to bring FP-10 for the class, and states that no other lube will be allowed. For both a manufacturer and a high-skill craftsman to recommend FP-10 is enough for me. Not that I needed their recommendation to start 9r continue using this product, but it reinforces my own observations. Try it, you'll like it. (Sorry for that last, had a flash-back...)

Thanks for all of the recommendations. I was already thinking along the lines of some dry lube, as I've spent most of my adult life in aviation, and there's a lot of dry lube used in aviation. This 10/22 that I have totally disassembled, is new to me, and it had it's share of crud. I've always ran my 10/22s that when it came to lube...less is best. That .22LR ammo is pretty dirty, so I'm thinking it needs to be something pretty dry. Not sure if I can bone dry, Dolomite. Have you noticed any wear on the aluminum receiver? I currently see a little on the rail at the top of the ejection port....the one that the charging handle bracket slides under. I'll have to get some of that Shooter's Choice FP-10 lube for some of my other guns. I'm afraid if I used bacon grease, I'd have to have a hard biscuit to go with it! I may have to try some EEZOX cleaner. Can I get it locally, or from some place like Midway?

Absolutely the best combination is to clean and degrease with 91% rubbing alcohol, then lightly lube with EEZOX. I work on so many guns that I buy EEZOX in bulk via my distributor account, I probably use 1-2 gallons per year but the average person only needs a few ounces. If you ever come to Lebanon drop me a pm and I'll give you a free small bottle to get you started.

Reminds me...there was an airshow performer years ago that put Mennen Skin Bracer in with his smoke oil. In the air, or on the ground, he had the manliest smelling plane at the airshow. Avgas always stinks, but around his plane smelled good.

Sorry, I missed the PM and this post too. I have been busy shooting and doing other stuff, so I haven't tried it yet. One of the rifles I've been shooting is my 10/22 Deluxe Sporter, stainless model. I'll need to pick up some isoproprial (sp?) alcohol for cleaning before I switch over. Thanks for asking.

  If you want to spend a lil' extra time on it I would suggest stripping the paint/coating from the bolt and polishing it to a mirror finish with jewelers rouge. the absolute slickest 10/22 actions I've ever felt have been done this way.

 As for lube, I have resisted the Frog Lube "hype" for a long time now but finally bought a jar of the Frog Lube in paste form last weekend. I cleaned the parts real good then hosed them down with non-chlorinated brake cleaner and wiped them down. I repeated the brake cleaner part 3-4 times and used a fresh clean rag (sock riddled with holes) to wipe them down the last time which left everything super dried out. Next I took my wife's hair dryer and, one part at a time, heated them up (doesn't have to be crazy hot, uncomfortable to touch to the inside of your bicep is more than enough). Then I stole one of my wife's makeup brushes, cleaned it up with brake cleaner and used it to brush on the Frog Lube paste. I looked like solidified bacon grease in the tub but when it hits the hot/really warm gun part it liquefies immediately and is drawn into every little crease and crevice. I probably over did it but I really caked it on there by applying, allowing it to sit for a moment and then applying more. By the time you get through with the last part, the first ones have completely cooled and the lube on the surface has turned back to a semi paste form which I then wiped off with a rag. It leaves no extra lube built up anywhere but out of the numerous different lubes I've tried, it is hands down the slickest. Supposedly by completely degreasing the parts and then heating them up before applying the lube, it draws the lube into any pores in the metal.

 I'm not sure how much AR shooting you do but if you do much at all you know how caked on the carbon gets on the tail of the bolt. I've got a buddy that's been using this stuff and can let it really build and then just wipe it of with a rag and it's cleaner than I could ever get mine using any other method. You only have to go through the brake cleaner and heating up process the first time and after that just wipe it down with the rag that you wiped the excess off with during the initial application.

 I just lubed 1 AR and 1 pistol with it last week and shot this weekend but I will wait for at least 1 more range trip before cleaning because I really want to see how well the stuff does for myself. My initial impression is that it truly is great stuff.

 

 

 One more thing that I will add is that the stuff has some cleaning properties as well. Even though the last 2 times I wiped the part down with a white rag after spraying with a harsh brake cleaner and the rags coming out perfectly white, as I applied the white/really light green paste it started drawing out left over grime and old lube because when I wiped the excess off, the rag came up semi dirty and black.

Thanks Luke, sounds like the Frog Lube is good stuff. I do have an AR...that when handed to my friends with a 30 round mag installed, goes through quite a few rounds! Morale of the story...keep a 5 round mag handy! Hinting about the barrel heating up, won't help. They stop when the mag's empty! Just kidding... I'm glad they enjoy shooting my AR. You're right about the clean up afterwards...a pain. I'll have to try some of the Frog Lube. Thanks.

Mil-Comm TW25B.  The fact that it comes in the re-closeable syringe with a small tip is great.  It allows you to dispense a very small amount and get it into tight spots without making a mess.  I'm told one syringe is a multi-year supply since you don't waste much.

Let me rephrase that...100LL stinks. The good old red 80 octane, we used to have, didn't stink like the new fangled 100LL. I'll bet it may really have a pleasing aroma in a V- tail Bonanza though! What do you think?

I bought a small supply of EEZOX to try. Haven't had the time to do the prep and apply yet, but hope to soon. Thanks for the link. Looks like this Mil-Comm TW25B might also be a good thing to have in my gun cleaning kit.
