If people who were on Government assistance, that is the ones that were milking the system, had to go knock on the doors of their neighbors up and down their neighborhood and had to look them in the eye and ask for the money... I think there would be a different attitude about government assistance. Both by the receiver and the giver.

Don't get me wrong in the least. I think that a welfare system has merit. Unfortunately it is being bastardized by the ones that use it as a means of not having to work. Many people go "into the system" because of a life emergency and are able to work their way out of it. This was the intent. Not what it has become.

Exactly! Like social security... never designed as a retirement tool, only as some sort of a net to keep you from slamming your butt against the ground.

Seems like I read somewhere that was the main fear when it was being put into place... that it would become a crutch for a section of society.

The welfare system has become a way of life. It is now becoming a RIGHT. Its not just what we think of as welfare. When someone can get back a couple of thousand dollars by filing a tax return and not have paid in any taxes what do you call it? This will only increase under Obama. He is a classic socialist. Anyone who can watch the plumber video and not see this is a fool. I am afraid there are a lot of fools out there.
