Help finding 1-4x AR optic

Recommended Posts

Like it says, I need some help deciding on a 1-4x optic for my new AR build. Read so many reviews on all of them, I could use some personal experiences to help convince me.

Just as a reference, it's a BCM rifle. Thinking something in the $500 - $600 range might be appropriate? Really not sure how much I should spend on the optic.

I ended up putting a 1-4x Bushell AR Optics on mine. It's a decent scope for the money IMO. Much cheaper than your price range. http://www.bushnell.com/tactical/rifle-scopes/ar-optics

I am in the process of doing the same, I've been looking at the Trijicon Accupoint.  Heard good things, but I am tempted to reach for the Nightforce and spend the extra couple bucks.  Good luck and let me know what you decide.

I love my Accupoint. It is fast up close and more forgiving with eye relief/cheek weld than I thought it would be. The reticle choices is the only limiting factor. I have the green triangle as speed was my number one priority. I also have a 1.5-4 Leupold Mark AR SPR Firedot but much prefer the Accupoint for speed. Edited by cch2a

In that price range I would likely go with the Vortex Viper PST. If you could save up a couple hundred more I would go with the SWFA SS HD 1-4. I have the Vortex Viper PST 1-4 and its fine optic for the money. Ive had mine mounted on my PTR and mostly used it as a medium range optic almost always on 4 power so I cant really comment on how it operates at high speed on 1 but its performed well for how Ive used it. I also have the SWFA SS HD 1-6 and can only assume the quality of the 1-4 is every bit that of the 1-6 and my 1-6 is one bad dude. I have yet to get trigger time behind it as I just got it in a few days ago but the quality is amazing, so much so that I have pretty much decided to get rid of my Vortex Razor HD and replace it with another SWFA SS HD optic.

A guy on the Hide did a very good review on several of the 1-4 variable power scope, its a little bit older so a few of the scopes have been updated in different ways at this point however its still worth a read imo.

For the price I'm pleased.   I have the non-illuminated reticle version.   I have it mounted with this.   http://burrisoptics.com/arpepr.html   The QD version.

Awesome, thanks Trekbike! That's the mounts I ordered as well and also mine is the non-illuminated version. I appreciate the feedback.

I keep coming back to the Vortex PST 1-4 for mine. Haven't decided yet, but I like it for the price

I've heard nothing but good stuff about all the Vortex stuff, although the only one I have and can vouch for is the Strikefire. I probably would have went with the PST if Palmetto hadn't had the Bushnell with Burris PEPR mount for $199. Kinda hard to pass that up. But I have one more bald AR that may get the PST anyway.

$199 was a good deal for the bushnell/burris

I've never used the strikefire, but I have a Sparc on an AR. I use it for 3gun, and I have been very happy with it too.

It's still on sale and in stock. Mine shipped today.

SouthernLion, I assume you're probably looking for higher quality but just in case you might be interested, here is the link

I've been looking for scope of this magnification and one with an illuminated reticle. The problem I'm running into is they are all sold for .223 and I'm wanting to put it on a .308. I haven't been able to find one that lists a reticle made for a .308. Wonder how close the Bushnell would be?

I know you stated your budget is above and beyond what it would take to get this optic, but if you wanted to pick up something just to see if you like 1-4 optics, I've really been impressed with this one I have from Primary Arms for the money. Really the only reason I'm replacing it is because the carbine it's on gets shot at distance more than inside 100 yards so I don't use the adjustability. Might get you into adjustable optics and find out what you like/don't like before dropping big money http://www.primaryarms.com/Primary_Arms_1_4X_24_Illuminated_Scope_PA14X_p/pa14x.htm Edited by KKing

Burris 1.5-6x40,Leupold Mark 4 MR/T or if you really want the best IMO Elcan SpecterDR if 7.62 BDC is what you are looking for. However bdc reticles are typically no where near as accurate as click adjustments and everything is going to come into play with the bdc ammo, barrel length, twist etc...ultimately if you cannot get your rifle to match the velocity to that of the scope the bdc basically becomes useless.

You can calculate holdover, range targets or click adjust turrets.

I guess I am in the minority here, but I just did not like the vortex pst 1-4.  The reticle was horrible IMO.  It was far too small and the mil hashes were tiny and ran together for me.  There is no way I could get an accurate holdover if needed.  The glass was really clear and quality was spot on for a $500 scope, but I hated the reticle.

That makes sense. Was hoping for something a little less expensive. I have always liked Burris scopes.

Like 48 South I have a SWFA 1-6x24 and can't say enough good things about it. Clear glass, built like a tank, FFP. Price is a little higher than your stated range but it is well worth it IMHO.

Luepold VX-R Patrol. Is a standard mil reticle with an illuminated dot center. It's what I plan to buy when funds allow

Seemed to be $599 everywhere I looked. Went to Bud's online and did the "make an offer" on it as it was listed for $599 as well, and boom, accepted $540. Shipped with insurance for $555. Cheapest I have been able to find.
