Need SKS help

My brother got given an SKS from a friend. I don't know a lot about these and he knows even less. He has an extended magazine on it, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how it goes in the rifle. It appears the magazine was spot welded onto a magazine well to take the place of the stock box magazine. Any help?

With the bolt pulled back, insert towards the muzzle of the gun first, that should do it.

I think you've got to remove the trigger assembly to remove or install the magazine.

I recommend finding an original 10 round mag and using stripper clips. Those aftermarket jobs can be unreliable and a real pain. Not to say that this one is, but the originals just work.

I use to sell those 30 rounder magazines and SKSs when I was in the business.  These were my bread and butter.  My own experience, pull the bolt back and wiggle in.  Yes, you can snap out the trigger by depressing on the raised button, but you can also jiggle/wiggle push hard for the 30 rounders to work.

I think the only time the trigger group has to be removed is to take out the original box magazine. I modified mine so the magazine gan be changed with the bolt closed . however , I still use the factory magazine begause the do work better. I have had some of the others that worked very good and some that were terrible.

I've put a couple aftermarket mags on SKS's in the past, some you have to tweak(bend) the feed lips up a little so the bullet tip of the cartridge is angled up a little more to feed in the chamber. If not the tip of the bullet will contact just below the chamber and will not feed. That seems to be most of their problems, i've made a couple reliable by bending the feed lips (SLIGHTLY) up at the front of the mag.

 

That's why I said TWEAK, don't over do it, the feed lips also have to have no friction in the bolt grooves.

I run both 20 and 30 round ProMag magazines on my sks, absolutely no problems, I also have the ATI Strikeforce stock...The trick to getting the aftermarket external mags to not jam is to fully load the mags when you first buy them new, then let them sit a day or 2, i usually let them sit for about a week before initial use...New mags have a super tight spring, which causes the round to "nose up" when the bolt comes back to reload the chamber...The practice of preloading the mags before first use has worked for me to eliminate the jamming issues.. :0)
