Pennsylvania hospital: Wounded doctor fired back at gunman, officials say

DARBY, Pa. –  A doctor who was grazed by gunfire from a patient in his office at a suburban hospital on Thursday helped stop him by apparently returning fire with his own weapon and severely injuring him, but not before a caseworker was killed, authorities said.

The patient opened fire after entering the office with the caseworker, District Attorney Jack Whelan said. Witnesses reported hearing yelling before the gunshots.

Several hours after the shooting, investigators had only limited information on what happened inside the closed office but believe the doctor, a psychiatrist, "from all accounts, would have acted in self-defense," Whelan said.

The doctor, who suffered a graze wound to his head, "faced a situation where his life was in jeopardy," Whelan said.

Yeadon Police Chief Donald Molineux said that, "without a doubt, I believe the doctor saved lives."

They are no different than any other business.   They need to post like everyone else.

I do not know of a hospital that is not posted, this could be a first where a good guy stopped a bad guy in a hospital

and not get charged with caring past a posted location.

Being a doctor just might get him a way out.

To bad it wont get on the national news other than Fox.

Most states do not have any sort of criminal penalty for people with licenses carrying past a 'no guns' sign.  It was probably completely legal for that individual to carry in the hospital.

When I lived in MN it was a $25 fine if you didn't leave when asked to by a store employee that had a sign posted at their store. So, you leave, no fine.. Don't leave, $25 fine.

HMM, I know the link the OP posted is a FoxNews link but out of curiosity I searched Bing for more stories about this. There were several, some links to ABC, CBS, NBC but were all local city channels, not the national news sites. No CNN link at all and no MSNBC link either. I'm sure if the doctor hadn't been armed and stopped the psycho before he killed him and more people those news outlets would still be reporting on it, seems like they don't want anyone to hear about an armed citizen saving lives with their gun. Whatever you think about FOX at least they report on stories you wont hear from the rabid liberal media.

Well, last time I went to visit my Dr at Baptist in Memphis, the usual "no firearms" posting on the door was gone, and has been since my last visit 6 months ago.

This was not the hospital itself, but the Dr offices that are next to the actual hospital, the "Medical Plaza's".

I don't know about hospitals but my doctors office is not posted and every person that works in her office has a carry permit and is armed including her. She paid for them all to get their permits after attending classes on gun handling and safety. She ahs been my doctor for about 15 +years now and we talked about this about 4 years ago. She said she had no issues with her patients being armed........

I have no clue if any of my coworkers at VUMC actually carry against policy/law but it wouldn't surprise me one bit between the number of them I've run into at the range and the death threats we've received from a few patients, I'd actually be surprised if none were.
