I have never shot a rifle before and I want to take my new AR out shooting.   Could you guys give some tips for proper stance?

It's kind of hard to argue with the Marine Corps method of shooting. As a quick tip I'll say that the closer the weapon is to your body, and the lower it is to the ground, the more stable it is. If you are going to shoot off-hand then hold the rifle across your body as much as possible using the magazine to stabilize it in the bend of your arm. That takes a little contortion, but I hit the bull every time.

My dad taught me how to shoot cross legged like the picture shows when I was a kid and it is more comfortable than it looks and very stable. JTM We the People of the United States, in order to form a more Perfect Union......

My advice, with the muzzle pointing to the intended target in a safe manner, what ever feels right for you, point, and pull the trigger.  No wrong way, providing its safe and you feel comfortable.  Each outing you will find a different way to play.
