Need help removing grips

Recommended Posts

I am cleaning up a friends old S&W 586.  I has a set of Pachymar grips on it.  I turn the screw and it will not back out.  Am I missing something or is the screw stripped?  Any suggestions on how to remove the grips?

Does the female threaded end spin as well when you turn the screw?  If not, put something thin between the grip and the frame and pry up slightly as you are turning the bolt.  If it does spin, then the grip on that side may just pry off if you take it easy.

But the part it screws into doesn't spin?  If that is the case, something is definitely odd.  I can see if the part it screws into also turning that it wouldn't back out.  Maybe take a small dowl or something that fits just inside the "nut" area that will only push on the bolt itself.  Put it on a counter and push down on the dowl with the gun while trying to turn the screw.  You may want to put some Kroil or or other penetrating oil on the nut area first and let it sit for a few hours to help loosen it up a bit.

Turns out the nut in the grips had broken free and was turning with the screw.  I used a razor blade and peeled away some of the grip so I could grab the nut with some vice grips.  Doesn't look great but I can at least get the grips on and off now.
