.45 for winter carry

All, I'm looking for suggestions for a winter carry .45. I love the 1911 platform for the range but I prefer dao for carry. I have a XDs for summer carry but I know I can get away with more in the winter. Glocks typically don't "line up" right for me but I am considering a still considering the 30S with several hundred rounds training ammo. My question, what else should I be considering? Is there any other options out there in the "slightly larger than subcompact .45 market". I've had the smith m&p 45c and I still consider it a fine weapon and a viable option. Thanks in advance, Ben

Winter carry is there such a thing as winter here?

I have carried a 1911 year round as well as a Berrerta 92G and a Ruger SR 9C. But I am a tall guy.

How do you plan to Carry? Iwb owb? My suggestion would be to get a quality holster it will make all the difference in the world once you decide what to carry.

I will more than likely carry iwb. I only carry outside when wearing a suit. I've been using thesis holsters lately. Because of that product, server all holsters from my "box of holsters" are posted for sale at the moment.

I carry an XD-45 in the winter. It fits in a supper-tuck holster or in my vest pocket. 13+1 rounds of 45acp makes me fell warm and fuzzy. I also carry my Colt Government. It is surprisingly slim.

Another gun that I would recommend is a Sig p220. It is the best of both worlds DA and SA.

All of those are viable choices and most are available in fullsized and compact versions

OK you already have an XDs for Summer Carry so I'm thinking its a 9mmP 3.3" model. If so then why not just go with another XDs in .45ACP but with the 4" barrel for Winter Carry. A high capacity handgun isn't a requirement for a HCP holder, in some ways it is more of a hassle then a benefit. What you train with and shoot well is sometimes far less than you'd recognize.

If I already carried an XDs, I'd probably stick with the platform and go with either an XD or XDm of some sort if I wanted something a little bigger.

USP45 or USP45C might fit the bill.

The Sigs are available with a DAK trigger and the HKs are available with a LEM trigger, if you must have a DAO trigger.

Check out the HK45C and the USP 45C, both can be had with the LEM trigger in various weights of trigger pull.

The Sig 220 is probably one of my favorite platforms of firearms and especially in 45acp. The weight will bother you before the size though.

I myself just do not care for the any of the 45acp Glocks, Springfields, or Kahrs. The 45 M&P's I could learn to like though.

Another options is the Kahr CW45. It is a single stack 7 rds is slim and has a good trigger and can be carried easily IWB.  My Sig P220 is my house gun due to weight.

Though I've already recommended another XDs in 45ACP with a 4" BBL I've also been reflecting back on other .45ACP pistols I've owned & carried. All of the suggestions here are good ones but an old school solution that's still a great one is a 1911 GM, Combat Commander or Commander. RRI (ARMSCO) & ATI are great lower cost platforms. Springfield Armory 1911 pistols are another remarkably affordable option as well. Colt and others are a bit higher priced but generally need less tweaking insofar as general a bit nicer build.

picked up a G30SF from a fellow TGO'er. After a couple hundred rounds this weekend, i'm in love. The grip angle has never felt "right" on the other glocks i have owned. However, something feels differant on this one. It maybe in my head but i had not problem connecting with the target.

 

I just recieved my Thesis holster. Just waiting on night sites now. Then i will have a carry gun that may leave the Xds in the safe more times than not.........

Para made (still makes?? Not sure??) a few 45s that are quasi 1911 in dao (they call it LDA).  LDA for light double action and mere humans can actually pull the thing though its long I would say its under 5 pounds across the travel.  

 

S&W makes a DA( not dao) in a "1911ish" frame, or did, if you are open to used.

For warmer weather I carry an XDS .45. For colder weather I switch up to an 3.8 XDM .45. I have a slim frame and tend to wear fitted clothing so there is not much I can do before I start printing very obviously.

Have friends in the Chattanooga PD that carry their Sig 220 IWB. They're able to carry them with just a polo over them tucked in and there's not much printing. These are bigger framed guys. 6' and over.
