I want to try one out in my colt defender 9mm.

 

I am shooting a bit off target, but I believe it is me, not the pistol.

 

I believe I am pulling off target as I keep going low and left pretty consistently.

Yes, don't leave the bore sight in the gun 'cause bad things can happen. :D

 

If you're a righty and pushing the bullets low, left then your jerking the trigger which pushes the muzzle low left. 

Try grabbing a little more trigger. Stick your trigger all the way in to the first joint and then try shooting. 

 

Try dry firing just like if you at the range. As you pull (which I think is what you're doing) watch the muzzle it will 

get pushed to the left before the trigger breaks.

I use AimShot laser bore sighters for my rifles. But they are only a rough in to get you on the paper.

Fire three to five shot groups and make sight adjustments. Or as Greg said let someone else shoot it.

FWIW, I was taught that for low/left hits it was less finger on the trigger. To use the pad of the finger so you pull straight back. Have I got that backwards?

Search on here for the printable targets, there's one that has a diagram showing what you're doing depending on where you're hitting

I have had no luck with bore sights.  You want to sight a gun in,  lock it in a rest, fire it, and adjust the sights onto the hole it made.  There, its now sighted in for that ammo at that range, a few iterations of this can refine it as needed, at least 3 shots to start out.  When satisfied with the gun in the rest, go shoot it.  If it is off, its YOU.

 

have someone else shoot it is a great answer.  But this requires the other person to be good... 

 

everyone is a little different; a lot of times a gun that I can hit with all day is off for a friend trying it out.  Simply how a person forms their sight picture can be enough to give an inch or more at range...

My "flinch" is a low left hit.  I found it was related to squeezing too tight with my support hand because I don't do it when I shoot one handed.
