No, it will not violate the C&R...

The determination is based upon the receiver.

I don't believe that is correct. ATF Ruling 85-10 clearly states that C&R status is only extended to firearms "in their original military configuration." Frames and receivers alone do not carry the C&R status, but the firearm as a whole does; as long as it is in it's original configuration. Example: if you swap the original wood stock of a C&R SKS with a synthetic stock, the SKS would lose it's C&R status, even though the frame/receiver is still the same.

From what I have read, adding a scope to a C&R weapon does not seem to affect it's status. The problem seems to arise when you remove something from the original configuration, and replace it with something unlike the original.

My understanding of the C&R rules is adding to isn't a problem, it's replacing that becomes questionable. Here we are in agreement Dog

Are you looking to sell that weapon to another C&R holder? If not, then it doesn't matter. Once it's in your possession, it doesn't matter what you do to it or if it's still a C&R or not. It's YOUR rifle now. C&R only mattered when you were purchasing and having it shipped to you. The only way it would matter if it violates C&R is if you are trying to sell it to another 03FFL holder. But with what you are asking about, its only a temporary mod it looks like so it would be easy to swap back.

It is gonna be temporary...until I can get the stupid groundhogs out of my friend's field. One horse already broke it's leg when it stepping in a burrow.

I've never seen a groundhog evaporate before but I'm pretty sure a x39 can do that quite nicely. Haha. Good hunting.

Just in case there are any hunting law purists on here...yes I got a damage permit.

Well, my friend and I went out after the groundhogs (aka rats) this morning...

One was at ~50+/- yards. He had his Bushmaster AR-15 looking thing with a scope on it......he missed... ;)... waited a few minutes for the rat to show back up...he popped his head up...got my SKS ready (had iron sights as the scope assembly hasn't arrived yet)...yeah...the x39 was a little overkill...I'd post a pic but it was too nasty to look at.

Wednesday I'm gonna use my scoped M91/30 on it.............................

Yeah, the x54r is probably quite a bit above overkill, haha.

If i ever get my digital camera up and running...(hahaha)...I'll post some pics as to what's left of the oversized rats...:death:

Ninja128...try dumping a s#&%ton of mothballs down their holes...it's fun, or the ole kerosene w/match trick...:):P

About my friend...he just needs to dump the AR and get a REAL rifle...like an M91/30.

My Savage .17 hmr has done the trick out to 100 yrds on 3 this year. One was at 20 yrds. My 4 yo son loves it when Daddy gets a ground hog. He is the 1st one on the scene!

Oh god...

Im really surprised the GAMO wouldnt kill one...course I dont know much about dirt rats. I think maybe a 10/22 with a good scope would be the perfect ground hog killer...cheap, reliable, and pretty accurate.

Something in .17 would be awesome for this as well. I remember taking a few of those little rascals on the mountain with one. Squirrels too!

Nasty mess those things make.

You could get'em all with one shot if they'd line up for ya, aka Quigley Down Under.

I'm considering buying an SKS and have two questions.

1. Is there one model (country) to stay away from. I'm leaning towards Yugo, They're sturdier(?), but no chrome barrel. Is chrome barrel better or neccessary?

2. As long as it stays original it does not have to meet 922r ?????

OK, 3 questions.

Keep the piece removed/replaced for future potential selling.

I'm doing the same.

Though you are not likely to run into one, Armenian are reported to be of the worst quality. I own Romanian, Russian, Chinese and a Yugo and have owned a North Korean Vet bring back. I've never had trouble with any. Fit and finish I would rate them 1.Russian 2. Romanian 3. Chinese. The stocks are a little shorter on Chinese, but they are the only ones with a Chrome lined barrel. Earlier Chinese are better finished than newer ones. Look for one with a Milled trigger guard. If matching #, it will also have a pinned barrel, which some say is more favorable to the plain old screwed in type of later guns.

Thanks Glenn. Idid some more research and found a couple of good site for sks info. Too bad they didn't help me get the one I was bidding on. A 1953 tula that sounded to be in excellent condition. I had to go out and couldn't continue bidding. :wall: It went for $335. I'll find another.

$335 isn't a bad price on a Russian rearsenal or an original that hasn't been messed with (like having the ugly red laquer stripped off it -- $100 deduct).

The quickest way to tell if it's a rearsenal is a laminated stock, blued bayonet, strike through serial # on any part or mismatched/electro penciled ser# on any parts.

The Original, non-refurbished, unissued ones original sold for $300 to $350 when they were brought in about 10 years ago. Depending upon year, arsenal and condition, they now bring $400 to $550. Rearsenals bring $300 to 400 depending upon the same factors and extent of refurb.

Herogear has a late model Chinese with a spiked bayonet (I believe it's about a 1977 vintage, but an early import gun), Arsenal 266 military gun for around $250-275, which is about the going rate for a good military un-issued surplus Chinese (these were $79.00 back in the 1980's).

I'll keep looking. At least I picked up my 6" King Cobra today. Now my 4" has a big brother. I'll try to get a pic up tomorrow.

Just to triple check with people who will have a clue, installing this will not void the C&R status of my M59/66 correct. http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/SKS_UTG_SKS_4x32_Scope___Mount_Combo.html

Thanks guys!

Just my .02 worth, but you may find that scope/mounting system to be quite unstable, accuracy wise. Surplusrifle.com was where I read about the issue. I almost bought the scope/mount system, before I read the article.
