Who knew peeling tape released HUGE amounts of radiation

I saw this video and though it was amazing and a little bit scary. I do not work with tape all that much but imagine the radiation someone is taking who spends the day peeling tape. One of the scientists was worried about the amount he was taking on.

Yet another thing we did not know about nature not that long ago.

Just avoid gas free environments while peeling the tape-no worries!

Cool phenomenon, though.

That is a great discovery, as they said in the video, imagine being able to harness this for use in developing countries that can't afford xray machines.

Makes you wonder what other simple mechanical actions we may be doing to release that kind of energy. Sent from somewhere in the cosmos using magic...and bacon.

So is this why women that use taped on maxi pads are more volatile than tampon users???

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 2 of course it ate my spelling.

I know if you chew hard candy in the dark you can see piezo-electric sparks.

It seems like this is the same phenomenon. So be sure to avoid eating candy in a vacuum.

Imagine the fun you could have if it released radiation with atmosphere. Most major air ports have radiation detectors.

Also, I am not sure if atmosphere prevents the release as much as a vacuum makes it easier to record.

I know someone here has a radiation detector, can you see if this works with atmosphere?

Introduction of atmospheric gases wouldn't prevent the release of photons, including x-rays, but would tend to increase the absorption and scattering effects all photons go through on release, and would thus tend to decrease the intensity at any one locality.  Since X-rays and other high energy particles tend to ionize gases, they are readily absorbed by atoms in the atmosphere, and collisions with the same atoms will scatter the photons in many directions.

I wonder how much of the imaging on the plates is caused by X-rays, and how many pixels are caused by collisions with the electrons emitted by the tape, as electrons striking a plate can also form "images", albeit not as easily as X-rays.

After doing a bit of research on this, I found that the X-ray photons released by pulling adhesive tape have an upper energy level of about 15 keV, which is just above the level that form "hard X-rays" which can be used in imaging.  Apparently, researchers are experimenting mostly with more "exotic" materials than tape to produce higher energy X-rays which would prove more useful in building lower cost imaging machines.

Open a bandage package in the dark and you'll see blue sparks where the adhesive is parting
