Metro PD Encounter

And it would behoove those unlicensed carriers to inform the officer about the weapon. If they don't and he spots it, they will be looking down the business end of his gun. Traffic stops are very dangerous for a police officer and if they are on top of their game, they're always on the lookout for potential threats.

In which case he should be looking for a new job.

I am always on the lookout for potential threats, too. That doesn't mean I whip out Ol' Roscoe every time I see a gun on someone I don't know.

Personally the only interaction I've had with a TN Leo was at a DUI check point. I had my DL and HCP out and my window down as the THP Officer approached. We exchanged the usual howdy's and I handed the licenses to him. He asked where my gun was and I verbally gave him the location. He handed the licenses back with a have a nice day and waived me through.

As a retired LEO it's my experience things just go smoother if you inform the officer upfront that you are in possession of a gun.

So basically you are advocating a LEO threatening deadly force against a citizen who is committing no crime and had made no threatening actions, right?

I do pretty much the same thing - I know cops have a bitch of a job - so I try to make my interactions with them as positive as possible.

The LEO who is truly a professional and is genuinely trying to protect the rights of law-abiding citizens knows he has a hard job, but he doesn't use that as an excuse to violate those citizens' rights, and we shouldn't accept it as an excuse either.

Then don’t. If a LEO points a gun at you for no reason you have recourse; I don’t know of anyone that thinks this is acceptable.

I agree completely..  any officer who pulls their firearm out and points it at a citizen without a real and specific threat of serious bodily injury or death should be fired from the force, and be facing aggravated assault charges...

Just like you or I would if we did the same.

I'm not referring to having a gun pointed at me; I'm referring to ANY violation of their oath to uphold the Constitution. Edited by daddyo

I got pulled over today for speeding, Memphis PD.  Officer approached, told me why he stopped me, asked for my license, I gave it to him.  He wrote me a ticket, I signed it.  He was very polite and cordial.  As was I.  He apologized for detaining me a bit longer than needed, because his computer was slow, so I guess they ran a check on me.  I didn't hand him my HCP, he didn't ask about it.  I wasn't armed, but the topic never came up.

First time I've been stopped since about 2001 or so, guess I was due for a reminder.

Top notch professional behavior on the part of the officer.  My error for speeding.  He did his job.  No problems, no drama.  Weird, eh?

This is how it should be done.
