New Surplus Pistol Powder from David (DLM37015)

This weekend I was able to pick some of David's new Surplus Pistol Powder. And over the course of the next week or so I will be posting my results with this new powder.

Upon first glance it looks like it is going to be amazing powder for several reasons.

First, it is a flake powder which makes metering exacting charge weights extremely easy in most powder measures. As most of us know that reload that even though ball powder meters extremely well it is also pretty bad because it leaks out everywhere which causes a lot of waste, not something we want in these times when powder is in short supply. The other option is extruded powders and in most powder measures extruded powders get cut or cause the measure itself to hang up. And when it hangs up or cuts the powder your throw is different so it changes the consistency and when it happens to me I dump the charge back in the hopper. Now flake powder, like you see here, is the best of both worlds. It is small enough that it does not have the same problems with getting cut as extruded powder but his new Surplus Pistol Powder is large enough that you don't end up with it all over your reloading bench and therefore no waste.

Another reason why this powder seems like it is going to work extremely well is the bulk of the powder itself. It should fill the case rather well and for those that do not know case fill is very important to consistency as well as accuracy. It is also an added safety measure because it makes a double charge almost impossible to miss. Here is a picture of a charged 45 ACP case and although it might be difficult to see David's powder fills the case nearly the half way with the recommended starting charge, 5 grains, for a 230 grain bullet.

And here are the kernels laid out onto a penny for comparison. You can see these kernels are large but not too large.

And if you are wanting me to test anything in particular with this powder please feel free to ask. I will be posting velocities as reported by a chronograph, the standard deviation (very important to accuracy), accuracy itself and finally how clean it seems to burn.

If you are waiting on my test results to buy I would not because David will not sell anything that isn't of the highest quality. If you do not already have some I would buy it as soon as you can because powder supplies are dwindling by the day as well as the fact you cannot beat David's pricing on powders, bullets or primers. He literally is a once stop shop for all your reloading components.

And remember this, when most other resellers are trying to figure out how to make a buck off of fellow gun people during the times we live in David is trying to figure out how to save his customers a buck and that speaks volumes for the kind of man he is. He understands what it is like to be a shooter, that is because he is a shooter first and a business man second. He has an amazing selection of components (stuff that seems like no one else can even get like 309 caliber frangible bullets for reloading). He is also a man with honesty, integrity and a willingness to do what is right.

I believe it is or is closely related to Green Dot. It meters well and I use the Lee conversion tables for the pro disc measure.

Does not have the power of HS-6 but works especially if it is all that that's available.

Actually pretty clean and accurate.

Has a load table on side of the container for some calibers/bullets weights.

A really good deal on a pistol powder at this time.

Gordon, what powder is that.

And 1+ for David. I had asked him to hold some H322 for me. That was over a month ago. When we met up at the gun show in Knoxville he had it waiting for me. All other dealers were asking $30-35/lb. got mine from David for $25

Gordon, what powder is that.

It's "Surplus Pistol Powder".  I'm also curious to know what it is (commercial designation) and where it came from (surplus from who and what).

Just wanted to give an update on this powder. And in one word I will say it is amazing.

It meters beautifully in my RCBS powder measure. Accuracy wise I am getting sub 1" groups at 7 yards using this powder with some cast, and powder coated, 230 grain Lee tumble lube bullets. With this powder and my cast bullets my Metro Arms 1911, that has reworked, shoots better than my factory self defense loads.

So far I have shot about 150 rounds and it is as clean as any other powder I have ever used. It isn't spotless but it isn't filthy either.

I will say that the starting load of 5.0 grains with a 230 grain bullet did not lock the slide back on an empty magazine. But the starting load is just that, a starting load. With 5.2 and 5.4 grains of powder the slide locked back 100%. And even with 5.4 grains of powder the primers still looked great. There was some flattening but not what I would consider alarming.

Unfortunately I was unable to chronograph any loads today because of the blue sky but I will get some numbers within the next week or so. And hopefully at the same time I will test some 9mm loads.

Thanks for posting this Gordon! My wife signed us up for a rather pricey beach house vacation so funds are locked down tight until that's over and done with at the end of the month but hopefully there will still be some or be more at that point. On one hand I have enough Titegroup and Red Dot to shoot pistol for years (unless I aquire a 9mm or .45 carbine) so it's hard to justify buying any more pistol powder but on the other hand I sure would like to give it a try.

I have searched for "pistol powder" and do not find a thing about it.

I do find pistol powder, but it is listed as a generic term as a list of powders

that are used in pistols.

Not sure if he has it listed here but he has it at his stand. It has no number or name other than "Surplus Pistol Powder" with its starting loads for 9mm, 38/257, 40 and 45 ACP on the label. So far I have not found a commercial powder that is similar. This is a brand new surplus powder so very few people have it here. I got some to test and so far I am extremely happy with it. I like it enough that I am probably going to switch to it for all my pistol needs.

It is its own powder and works great. The load data on the side of the jug is the starting load and I had to increase it some to get it to lock back on an empty magazine with my 1911.

I will try to get some numbers this week, finally figured out what was wrong with my chronograph.

Hey all, first post here.  I am finally happy to find some info on this powder.I bought some at a gun show in Knoxville back in the spring when I needed pistol powder.  It came in 5 lb jugs marked surplus pistol powder and its gray flake just like in the pics above. I bought two jugs. However, my labels didn't have starting loads on them, they had grain loads and fps info on them.  From this I worked up a nice 45acp load 230 grain bullet load as well as a nice 9mm 147 grain bullet load.  I dig the recoil from this powder, somewhat like Unique in 45 and not as snappy as Titegroup for 9mm.  It burns well with no unburnt flakes in lower powered rounds, cleaner than Unique,Universal,Titegroup, and 231.

David is a vendor here on the forum, he lives close to Nashville.

Between him and Mis Sam, you wont find better people to buy supplies from.

They have treated me VERY WELL!!!

Just wish I had more money when I see them.

They make the gun shows In Murfreesboro and Franklin.

As well a Knoxville.

I haven't stopped by here in a long time.  Who is David and where is he located?

After some research on the net I am thinking this powder might be Rio powder made by Maxam.  Made in Spain and Brazil.  Anyone have any more info on this powder ?

Hey David,

Will you have any 8lb jugs of W231?  If not I know you mentioned SR7625 as an alternative to W231, would you have any of that?

Will you have 115gr or 124gr FMJ's, possibly Montana Gold and primers?

Do you still have any bulk .22's?

If you have any of this can you provide ballpark prices for it?

Thanks
