So the new homestead is comming along nicely. I was brush hogging by the barn today I came upon what I thought was a piece of an old couch with beer cans thrown around it. So put all the cans in a trash bag and grabbed what I thought was a piece of old furniture turns out it was a old stand up shower base which I was going to drag off until I discovered what I think is a well? It appears to go down about 25 or so feet there is what looks like flat field stone layered for at least 20 feet. There is water visible looks to be clean? Clearly someone took a lot a lot of time and effort to do this there is no cement used just cant figure why it would be where it is and if it would be useable or if there is any way to tell the age of it?

Off the top of my head reply. As for why it's where it is, likely someone back in the day witched for it & dug it there.

People used to lay stones like that for fences, etc., without cement. Fitted by hand. Probably took a while.

Safe to use? Back then, probably so. Now, with all the stuff in the ground water, who knows without testing.

I can't help you much but if I were you if put a hand pump on the well and get it tested.

If you do have the water tested, take it to a lab, not the water dept.

They will condemn your well, they dont like people having their own wells.

Having clean water will be the next big thing like oil is now except people MUST have water. Had someone said 20 years ago that we would be drinking water out of bottles that we bought I would have told them they are crazy. Most city water has more chemicals and stuff that will hurt you than most wells.

 

In case you want to pull water from the well for cheap you can follow my instructions. I use it to pull water from over 40 feet.

It's probably good, fresh water. I'd test it before using for drinking water regularly. If nothing else, it would be good to drop a submersible pump into and water your garden with.

I am going to get it tested. We are not what I would call preppers but we do have provisions for about 6 months. We also raise our own fowl. So to have our own.emergency water supply would be great.

If icould figure out how to do it I would add a picture of it.

Working great just. Have to run it in a lower gear with higher rpms so my tractor does not run to hot. Especially in this heat.

If you are going to test it, test it a couple of different times. Once during a dry spell, once after a lot of rain, and once on a typical day. We have ground water contamination where I live, and the neighbor had it tested several times. It only tests contaminated after a heavy rain. the neighbor thinks that the ground water flows from our place toward the contamination, but all the water backs up after a lot of rain.
