Does Schermerhorn Symphony Center Ban?

Recommended Posts

Ended up calling the information office. They have a no weapons policy, and I asked about where it is posted. The person on the phone didn't know, but I'll be keeping an eye out to see what's up when I'm there tonight.

With this information, this thread might be better placed if moved to the prohibited locations thread.

As soon as the person you spoke to mentions your call to a co-worker and THAT person translates it to, "some guy called and asked if he could carry his gun in here..."and REPORTS it to their boss...let the no gun postings begin.

And that is how a law abiding citizen tries to do the right thing by acquiring information, has their inquiry twisted against them as a gun toting nutjob (these paranoid freak shows think they need to carry a gun to the Symphony or opera or target or...) you end up screwing yourself to obey the law.

As a heads up, the odds are high that will be the response whether they actually do have an official policy or not.

A better question is whether they are posted, but not much better. Better to find out another way, and "let sleeping dogs lie".

Not that I am paranoid,

but if I was that organization, I would have noted your phone#, executed a reverse lookup, and then search you as soon as you show up and present a credit card (or ticket bought with one) at the gate, or even at your seat.

Cross-referencing data ain't rocket-sinus any more. They can know who you are and where you are very easily.

Well, the whole thing was a farce anyway since I did not end up going due to a last minute business related emergency.

That said, I guess I need to clear things up just a bit, so that the assumption isn't that I'm stupid here.

I did not call them and ask if I could carry a gun into the symphony hall. I called and inquired as to whether or not they have a weapons policy. For all they know, I could have been an anti-gunner making sure that they were providing a "safe" environment for me to attend the symphony. Or maybe they thought I was asking if I could carry a gun into the building. Either way, I don't care one little bit. What bothers me more is that I report my findings here on this forum, and all I am met with is the assumption that I did something stupid or wrong by asking a question.

I see fear and derision from people who are supposed to be supportive of the rights that I choose to exercise and defend.

I understand that the majority of you are trying to be helpful, but for the rest of you, please refrain from offering useless, fear-based advice and comments. They should have no place here.

And one last thing. If we are beaten into submission to the point that we can't even ask questions for fear of the reprisal, then what's the point of fighting the madness anyway?

heh.  Welcome to TGO, newcomer.  You ask much (and seem to be a bit sensitive) of a group which you only met. Stick around and watch a while before being so, well..."authoritative".

My apologies. I was, perhaps, a bit too sensitive in my reply. I do ask, though, that the condescension from more senior members be replaced with an atmosphere of constructive help and advice that might help a "newcomer" such as myself more easily share experiences. No condescension was intended by my remark.  I just happen to be the type that believes no good will come from calling a place and inquiring as to their weapons policy.  I appears as though you did so with some tact but I usually assume the conversation goes something like...."Can I carry my gun in your place".  If you have couth enough to go to the symphony, you have couth enough to inquire correctly ....many people do not, thus my comment.  Such calls can and have resulted in establishments deciding that they suddenly need a policy and that resultant policy is not a friendly one.

Thank you for your comments and support. I am seeing the point you are making, and I will likely not be calling any place again to make such inquiry. I don't think I did anything necessarily wrong this time. It's just frustrating to do the right thing and get told it's the wrong thing. I want to learn what I can from this community, and I in no way intend to step off on a bad footing. I'll make sure my passion doesn't get the better of me again.

Most any corporate or large non profit organization is going to have a no weapons policy.  The permit just keeps you from getting a weapons charge, but doesn't keep places from disallowing weapons.  The best thing to do is to just carry as long as you are legal and keep it concealed.

Yeah I wouldn't call a place and ask if they allow guns.  That is how Regions got the no guns signs was due to people open carrying in the branches.  Lucky that Starbuck's still has of yet not put up legal no gun signs in this state.  Most any place is going to say no.  You have a permit and generally you are going to be legal in most places you go.  That is the whole point of getting a permit.  Keep it concealed and it won't matter what an organization's policy is.

I can't remember, but Im pretty sure it's posted...haven't been there in a while but I specifically remember looking for the sign and NOT carrying in there.

I know this is a zombie thread, but I'd searched it earlier before going the Schermerhorn this evening.  If it's posted, I could not find a sign, verbiage, or any sticker anywhere.

So, I proceeded as if the premises was not posted.

Just FYI-  By the time someone else digs this thread up, it may be.

I'll be going in March so hopefully it still will not be posted.
