Which 1911 would you buy under $1500?

For $1500 you can buy two RIA's in govt. model, one to shoot in your left hand and one to shoot in your right hand and have enough money left to buy enough ammo to put up a pretty good gun fight.

For carry... A Dan Wesson or Springfield would top my list.

For the range, all I can tell you is what I did... Took a RIA and had it gone through with a Cylinder & Slide package and a Clark compensated barrel. I'm in it for just under $1500, and from an accuracy and reliability standpoint I'd put it up against pretty much anything money could buy in a 1911... Except in the appearance dept, it's worn because I use it.

I like to pretend that I know all about the various 1911s being offered today and then tell you that if you buy a 1911 it should have a pony on the slide, because that's what I have. A Colt government model 1991-A1 series 80. That's right, a series 80.......it is 100% reliable.

In MY realm, the best sounding steel guitar I've ever had cost me $900. Yes, it sounds better than an $8,000 Franklin. Or a $6,500 Emmons. High price doesn't always equal best. Low doesn't always equal worst.

I've owned several 1911s through the years.  Now I own a Springfield Loaded Edition in SS and it's been a great pistol! I highly recommend it!  But if I were just getting into 1911s, I would not spend $1500 on a new one (but then again, I would never spend $1500 for any firearm).  Instead, I would buy a RIA Government model and a thousand rounds of ammunition and learn to shoot it.  Then I would take the rest of the money I saved from the initial $1500 and do any upgrades I wanted to do to it.  You would come out in the end, with a fine custom pistol!

 

The only thing I wish my Springfield had was checkering on the front of the grip.

9mm since all of our semiautots are 9mm
Full size since it's highly unlikely I'll carry it.
Some kind of night sights
Ambi safety since I'm a southpaw
No preference on finish
Any other "upgrades" would be a bonus
Just a solid range / home defense / night table gun

Very simple. I have owned numerous 1911's and have always thought my Kimber Ultra CDP (original series) was the cat's meow. Never failed me and carries well.

 

Then I bought a Dan Wesson CCO (still under $1500) and it is a fine pistol. In comparison to my beloved Kimber, I was kind of upset. The DW makes the Kimber look like a school kid put it together. Serious.

 

Then I said to myself...Self, just how much better can a 1911 get without going full on custom?  Now I'm not one to part with money easily, but I will spend it if I can get a good deal. So along came a Wilson CQB. To say that the Wilson makes the Kimber look like a toy is an understatement. Totally different ballpark, nevermind same field. Is the Kimber a fine weapon? Absolutely, but it is now relegated to the safe. Is the DW a fine gun? Without question, and I will be buying other DW's in the future. Is the Wilson worth it? It's definitely worth what I paid (as new gun, bought for way less than new price) and it won't be leaving anytime soon.

 

But as I said earlier in this thread, the DW puts ALL other guns anywhere near its price range to shame. It's just that simple.

 

And to answer the original quote of why would someone buy a $1500+ 1911? Because they have the means, like the finer things in life, and are old enough & wise enough know that you get what you pay for.

I own six 1911's total and have never had any trouble out of any of them (even my $3500 Wilson CQB ELITE) Buy your self a Springfield Loaded Mod. you can't go wrong.
