AR'S are the Legos of the gun world. You can start with a plain Jane m4 and then go from there. I would look into palmetto state armory. I have 6 of their rifles and not a single problem with any of them. Just stick with a simple AR and as you learn the platform and what works for you then you can change or add stuff

I'm not a huge war relic buff although I appreciate them. So my answer is start with an AR because they're simple and fun. Then you expand from there.

If you've never built a rifle from parts before, start with an AR.  It doesn't get any easier.

never built a rifle befor this is my first time ....

You also aren't ever likely to get better deals on AR parts than you can get right now.  The bottom has fallen out of the market.

If you are going to shoot it, the AR platform is designed to be operated safely (verifying condition), cleaned easily, and last for a lifetime.  The design works well in that regard.  I would feel much more confident with my son - trained to operate an AR platform

If it is going to sit in a display case, build whatever you like to look at.    :pleased:
