Storm Monday Night

It never woke me up, but lightning got this tree in my back yard. Lightning is some powerful stuff. There were splintered pieces of wood all over our back yard.

Lightening can doe some really strange things for sure and so can extremely high winds like in tornadoes......... :up: :up:

I've lost a few trees to lightening here as well over the last few years. More to wind gusts, but did have some burn marks on a lot of them.

Lighting will super heat the water, turning it to steam and make a tree explode.

You sleep very well not to hear it.

If it's real close to your house some of the surge can ruin delicate electronics. My sister had that happen long ago, lightning hit a tree beside her house and she lost her answering machine, VHS player(real long ago), and a couple of other things.
yesterday I had to cut up a bunch of fallen big tree limbs with an electric chain saw. My gas saw doesn't work anymore but that little electric saw actually worked pretty good for small jobs. The secret is a sharp chain.

I expect so. It got into the heart of the trunk. You can pretty much see the center. Looks like the leaves are starting to wilt as well.

That didn't wake you up?  I know people who sleep better during storms.  I can't do it.  I've seen a lot of damage from wind and lightning so I lay awake thinking about what I'm going to have to fix in the morning.  Or worst case, that night.

That tree will probably live for a while if the back side is intact. However it will rot from the front and eventually die. I'd say from the picture it's susceptible to wind too. It's coming down one way or another

We are on the finger of a ridge. It's about 300' down pretty much all the way around us. It is VERY susceptible to wind. It's in a fence row. Maybe it'll blow over on the other side of the fence.

Trees will always fall in whatever direction will cause the most damage and inconvenience for you ...

 I know people who sleep better during storms.

I am one of those people that can sleep like a baby during a storm.  However I am also that guy that likes to watch the storm as it happens.

So I am often have to decide whether to stay up and watch or go to bed.

 

It normally depends if I have to get up for work or not.

 

5 nights, vs 2 so I normally going to bed.

A friend/coworker experienced something similar last night. The lightning traveled through the tree and into the house. Fried several electronic devices.

I live on top of a hill with two large red oak trees right next to the house, well, just one red oak tree now.

 

A few years ago I was sound asleep when suddenly I found myself stuck to the bedroom ceiling. After considerable effort un-gluing myself from the ceiling, removing my soiled tighty whitey's and showering, I suspected lightning hit the house.

 

The next morning at first light I went out to inspect for any damage. A large tree limb hit the roof and caused damage and you could see the path of the lightning going down the tree where it blew the side of the tree off and killed the tree. Being 4 yards from the back deck it was a $500.00 removal job because I didn't think it wise to call the insurance company and ask if I fell this tree and it hits the house, am I covered.

 

Since this incident, in addition to my G-19 and Surefire flashlight, I've added a paint scraper for better removal from the ceiling and a spare "Depends" on the night stand.

 

If lightning striking that close to your house and doesn't wake you from a deep sleep, you don't need ear plugs at the range, you read what's being said on your T.V. and your spouses hands and arms make all kinds of funny symbols when he / she communicates with you! Then there's that bright white light that completely penetrates the curtains, eye lids and brain even in a deep sleep.
