Introducing Rufus! The original 2nd amendment Rat

This is my baby boy,  Rufus.    He wants everyone to know he firmly believes in the right to carry as well.  (Too many damn cats)

Seriously though,  he's my pet Rat.  I had him out running around on my bed one evening and noticed that he seemed to have a fascination with my gun.  I watched him for a minute and then couldn't resist taking a picture.

 Anyways, I'm thinking Rufus would be better off with a compact of some kind.  Whatcha' think?  :)

Actually,  as surprising as this might sound,  rats make fantastic pets.  Rufus isn't a wild rat that I grabbed out of the sewers.  He's what's known as a "fancy rat".  Domesticated,  etc.  They are extremely intelligent and generally love people.  Although Rufus tells me he isn't too fond of snake owners  :)  In fact,  due to overall tempermeant,  I would buy my kid a pet rat before I would a gerbil or hamster or something.  They are much much less prone to biting and rats develop a very real attachment to their "people".  (Rufus comes to me when I call him)  Anyways,  I was just poking through the forum here and thought you folks would enjoy the picture.  Definitely not something you would expect to find everyday I supppose.   For those interested   (probably not)  they even hold national Rat beauty pageant contests where they dress up their female rats.   http://img2.timeinc.net/people/i/2011/pets/news/110613/rat-1-440.jpg

No!!  I don't  force Rufus to be a transvestite.    He wants to!  No I'm just kidding.   I don't sit down for hours on end and sew dresses for my rat.  Although he does sit on my shoulder in the evenings and watches tv with me while we eat potato chips together,  or whatever.  I actually skimmed through Google's Image search to try and find where someone has attempted to "arm" their pet rats.  Whether it be costume or otherwise.   I didn't come up with anything.  I guess not too many folks out there are taking their gun off their belt when they get home in the evening,  placing it on the bed,  and then tosses a live rat on the bed spread just to take a picture.  About the closest I have found is where they are using rats in Africa to sniff out left over land mines and other ordinance.

I've had a few rats before. I grew way more attached to them than my old hamster. One of them was originally a feeder rat that for some reason my roommates snake wouldn't touch. We left it in the cage for a day on a few seperate occasions and would come back to find them quite contentedly ignoring one another. We put him in an old hamster cage and noticed he really took a shine to the running wheel and especially seemed to like showing off by running in front of an audience. I called him Wheelie Gonzalas.

I also had a rat back in highschool named Pedro and he would go to school with me in my jacket pocket. I could put him on top of my hat and he'd ride around up there happy as can be. Either there or perched on my shoulder seemed to be his two favorite places. Pedro and I used to gross people out when I'd hold a cracker in my teeth and let him nibble the end.

I think rats make great pets if you like rodents.

I guess I'm a contradiction in terms.  I'm a gun owner but I do not hunt.  Likewise,  I could never take a rat and throw it into a cage with a snake.  I couldn't bring myself to do it.   Which is probably why I don't hunt as I cannot bring myself to pull the trigger on an animal that is no threat to me.   One that is kicking down my front door at 2 am is a different story.    Anyways,  Rufus was convenient to have around actually.  When the mouse on my girlfriend's laptop would stop working he would pull double duty.   http://home.comcast.net/~69johnny/Rufus-laptop.jpg

No bob tailed rats.  At least none occurring naturally.  However,  they do make a hairless rat.   I'm betting you won't find those too appealing either as most people don't.  They look a little strange.  They are also referred to as naked rats.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5y8uOjPrsU
